I'm about to build my first and am wondering if I should get the older i3 or the newer i5 ivy. I'll be running be 6870 with 8gb of ram. No overclocking. Computer is for 80% gaming. Games being played are skyrim, starcraft 2, minecraft, diablo 3, the witcher. Thanks!

Go for Ivy Bridge i5 3570K with one of the Z77 mobos; either ASRock Extreme 6 or MSI Z77A-GD65.

Read this review of Z77 Mobo at Tom's

What's your budget. We would be happy to help.

Sometime I think I'm the only one around here that actually takes the time to read the OP.

My budget is 700 as I will need to get an OS. The 3750k will require a better mobo and don't have the money right now. Maybe I can upgrade down the line or something but as for right now the locked CPU is fine. I'm getting a card with one pcie 3.0 and one 2.0 but the details say the 2.0 is x16 @x4. To get that price, I'm getting an $80 mobo.

Is this a real question?

I mean that's like saying my car is for 80% racing, should I buy a Chevy Sonic or a ZL1 Camaro.........

They aren't even in the same class or price range, your question makes no sense, obviously the faster, more expensive cpu with more cores is going to be the best choice.....

With that budget I would look at a B75 board (PCI-E 3.0) and something like a i3 2120.

I believe it to be a perfectly reasonable question actually. Lower cost CPU and up the motherboard, or go with what I got, i5 with a B75 board. Thanks Why_me, I had a B75 board to begin with but I took the one you suggested and with OS, am still under $800. Thanks again!
