This is my first build. I have no idea if all the parts will work together. I'm also trying to bring it down to about $1000. Could I save some money by using linux until Windows 8 comes out? Could I save some money on the graphics card or motherboard? I don't think I will use sli/crossfire but I might try to overclock if I need to in the future. Am I missing anything? Will the motherboard come with the cables I need or do I need to buy those as well?

If I take out the video card will I still be able to build it, or do I need to buy a video card as well? I'm thinking of waiting a few months to buy the video card so I can save some money.

That motherboard according to the page will come with a SATA cable.
You could use Linux to save cash, though that comes down to personal preference, so ultimately your choice.

I would downgrade the GPU before touching the motherboard. You can build a system without a graphics card, but integrated graphics on CPU's are not all that great, even with the new Intel 4000 graphics on your Ivy Bridge CPU.

May want to get a faster hard drive if it acts as your boot, green drives arent as fast (in general). If you intend to overclock, you'l need an aftermarket CPU cooler, the Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO seems to be the popular choice around here.

use the z7a-gd55 bcause you cant run SLI with that board.

also dont use a green drive. they are slow as hell and only save like 20 cents a year.

one last thing is to use Ram that is at a lower voltage. the ram that you are using is 1.65v and that is higher than the intel spec. you will need to use ram that is 1.5 volts or lower.

here i put together a build that is around the same specs. feel free to change the case or the ideo card
