What happened to all the 6950's

Hello,

I was wondering why all the stores (newegg, tigerdirect, microcenter) are no longer supplying 6950's? I'm a pretty new consumer regarding these kind of products so I really don't know the product timelines of when they're at their peaks and when they discontinue.

I'm kind of upset because I'm really satisfied with my Sapphire 6950 2gb. I was going to buy another but I can't find it for the great deal I had last november...

More about : happened 6950

I am in the same boat with you. I just snagged a 2nd one a day or 2 ago.... they are clearing out for the 7800s is all I can guess.

This is the card I bought, it was backordered for 2 day and I just check and it was shipped a few hours ago.

this model should CF with yours I would snag it up if I was you. Its a good card.

They stopped producing 6950's when they started producing the 7870's that replaced them.

yep they are EOL. Only people who would have a reason to buy are people like me who already have one and want to CF it. I considered selling my 6950, and jumping on a 7878 but I decided that since power cons was not an issue. More cost effective to just go ahead and CF it

Because they want you to buy a 7870 or 7850 instead. Supply has been dwindling for a while now and they were stopped all together so as not to compete with the newer cards :D

It is because the AMD manufacturers have recalled them all to change the stickers on them to say 7870... J/K

Still a good card just the 7850 is a bit better in many ways.

yep, just like the 5970 was still one of the best card while the 6000s were out but it was not for sale.

I jump on the card that I bought because I decided right now was close to my last chance to get a new card.... if I waited it would be buying a used one on ebay or amazon or selling and goign 7800s, which would have meant spending at least 300 more than the solution I chose.

And if anyone else here is like me I suggest that get that card, it is a good price and right now listed as while supplies last.

5970 still faster than a GTX 580 Nvidia Fails again LOL so many penny.

Most previous generation dual GPU top of the line cards beat current generation single GPU top of the line cards. Its been that way since the HD 4870 X2 days. Kind of a useless fanboy-ish point you're trying to make, but knock yourself out I suppose.

his point was a 5970 could have been sold this gen a pricepoint competitive to a 580 and it still beat it.

also the cards that are direct upgrades are still viable with each other.

Yes the 7850 is better than the 6950, but is it so much better that if they dropped the price on the 6950 by say 15-20% it would be be not be viable. Honestly the 6900 radeon series is better than any of the 7000s below the 7800s. They could drop the price of the 6950 to 200 flat and it would kill that section of the market.

The reason they took it off the market was to force people to upgrade. I am glad I swipe one of the last retail 6950s out there because now I am set for at least 2 years. I would love to be able to wait until the Haswell tick (2nd gen Haswell) to build my next rig and I think mine will do it.

AMD has publically stated a few days ago that they have stopped manufacturing the 6xxx series cards - and are instead moving on to the 7xxx's (mostly the 78xx's)
Since they cost exactly the same, and offer a ton better performance at the same time.

I think the release date is the 15th... its in Toms article. Either way doesn't make sense to keep making 6900s. 7800s perform better and are CHEAPER to make. So dropping to price on the 6900s would basically be shooting themselves in the foot

like I said only people who would want a 2nd 6950 right now is people like me and the OP, people who had 1 already and were looking to CF.

OP- like I said there are a few out there right now, I would jump on them unless you want to pay 500-700 more for a new set of 7800s.

also the make does not have to be the same. You can CF a 2GB Saphire with a 2GB XFX with little to no consequence.

Right. I have an unlocked toxic, so I'd have to dig up a 6970... But then it still maxes everything so I am probably stuck getting used in a year. oh well. Knew that went I bought it in September

well, my initial intention was to cf. however i changed my plans and i'm currently building my gf a gaming rig. since i liked the 6950's so much, i wanted to use the same type of model. unfortunately, due to the bad news that i have received in this thread, my plans have gone awry. i guess im going to either wait 1) wait for the 7850's or get the gtx 560 ti fermi 2gb...

How do you know this? Do you have internal numbers?
----
I would go for the 7850 if you need a new GPU soon unless Kelper is released quickly and competes well in that price range. The 7850 performs better in tessellated workloads than a 6950 while consuming much less power, so that's a decent win for a couple weeks wait.
