I'm still Cable Modem Hell!!

If all learning comes through frustration, I'm learning, but I'm getting really frustrated in the process!!!

I hit a wall when I went to download FarCry & couldn't do it with BroadBand, I couldn't do it. Here's what I've been doing to try & fix the dam thing. I've been through the entire houses wiring & believe it's good. I have got it down to 1 splitter. Even with the computer hooked up direct there was no change. Then I realized that the modem was dropping out, all the time.

I replaced the modem yesterday with a Motorola SurfBoard SB5100. That cured the connection problem, somewhat. Now I fly on the web, but downloads are in the 56k range. It will stay connected & download, just at the slow speed now.

I've been <A HREF="http://www.speedguide.net/" target="_new"> here </A>using there tools & trouble shooting my connection. Comcast says it's after the modem somewhere. I get some indications of the trouble, but can't pin it down. This is what I get when I run TCP/IP analyzer.

That's the way I built the house. cable has got a jack in the wall right behind the desk that the modem is on. That feed / jumper line goes directly to the splitter.

I installed the modem myself. I owned the one that was no good as well.

How ironic. I did notice how long the coax was that I have to the wall. When I was changing out the modem I found about 3 or 4 wraps, or loops of it, about 2' in dia. laying on the bottom of the case. I must have did that when I put it in 3 years ago. I should get a shorter jumper line then? The guy at Comcast said it looked like it was picking up a lot of of RF on my end.

I can't seem find out what speed I'm supposed to have, anywhere.

Well, normally she's too tired in the week, as she's up at 6.20am, leaves the house 30 mins later and doesn't get in until after 5pm. Combine that with running a Brownie pack and other little chores like ironing her work clothes etc, and she's beat most nights.

However, after yesterday, I got subtle hints that she might be game for more tonight. I'm crossing my fingers ready, but I'll just play it by ear. If's she's chirpy whn she walks in the door, I'm moving in for the kill.

I've got a real big task I've been assigned to today. I've got to actually leave the house & go out to a store & buy some night lights!! Wife can't see to piss at night in the master bath, no windows!!!

Yep! everythings up and running fine so far, all that upgrading caused me to have to reinstall XP from scratch, and so far (Knock on Wood), with a fresh clean install WinXP is really running well, I'm actually surprised, I'm really looking forward to SP2 coming out, its supposed to include a fix for my printer, that really would negate me having to dual boot in the first place. Well couldn't go to work today, we're in iceland, really nasty conditions, I just hope the power doesn't go out, my boss told me just to stay home and don't try to get out in it, I didn't argue! Yeee Haaa!!! An unscheduled day off!!! Life is Good!!!

Yeah, I'd hate to see your registry after all that cable crap, man computers and internet connections are great when its all working right, but its hell on earth when it isn't.

You've sure got that right. I felt like my leg was cut off or something.

I learned how to use AdWare, Spybot & SpywareBlaster together to really stop things from coming in. ZoneAlarm works well. The Comcast guy couldn't see my machine after the modem.
