How to connect to MiFi using a wireless adapter or router

Just bought a verizon 4g mifi. The laptop hooked up in a second to the device but i cant get my desktop computer to detect the connection. I tried using a USB Linksys wireless adapter then tried a netgear g-router but neither detect anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated, i am not that great with computers so feel free to dumb it down. thanks in advance!
