A disk read error

I turn my laptop on it won't load to sign on screen, it will say a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart. Ive done it so many times that now my computer will come on then soon as the Acer logo pops up it just shuts off and on. I have a home made recovery disk, doenst work ! Ive also tried alt+f10,,,, what can I do?

It's not uncommon for a hard drive to fail on a laptop due to it being knocked when it is on. There are other causes for this error but being a laptop this is the most likely probability.

as pjmelect mentioned it could be various things with a disk read error: hard disk failure, problem with the hard disk cable or controller on the motherboard. The most likely culprit is the hard disk as it has moving parts and is the most susceptible to failure.
