Help! When I start my computer, I get a black screen with the words "Windows protection error, restart your computer". I'm struggling with putting my first system together. I saved the sound card for last because of all the problems I've read about. I installed my SB Live 5.1 X-Gamer (retail) and restarted. Windows found new hardware and I installed the drivers. Upon restart the black screen of death described above reared its ugly head. When I remove the sound card, all is well. I downloaded and installed the latest 4 in 1 drivers and also the SB fix from www.viahardware.com to no avail.

My system is:

AMD 1.33
ASUS A7V133 (w/audio. Already disabled in jumpers and BIOS)
ASUS V7700
256MB RAM
WIN98SE
and so on.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm, don't know.

Might be IRQs (try using a different PCI slot).

Fixed it with some advice from another board. For those of you who have a similar problem:

1. Enter Windows in Safe Mode

2. Device manager, Under Creative Miscellaneous Devices, Disable Creative SB 16 Emulation under the general tab

3. Search for file CTSYN.INI

4. Change the line SBENABLE = True to False and save

5. Reboot

For some reason I had to move my card to the #2 PCI slot as well.
