FX 8150 or Phenom ii x4 965? Help please

95% of the time it will be used for gaming. Yes I know about intel but I just want to know, out of these two CPUs (FX 8150 and Phenom ii x4 965 BE) which will get me more FPS on skyrim/Mass Effect 3/BF3? Thanks for any answers guys. :bounce:

More about 8150 phenom please
  1. Bump.
  2. 965 with an aftermarket cooler and overclocking it. Not impressed with Bulldozer at all.
  3. An overclocked Phenom ii x4 965 will destroy FX 8150!

I wouldn't say "destroy", but it's slightly better in most games. BF3 is an exception because it apparently works better with more cores. the 965 is also cheaper, so it has that going for it, too.

get an am3+ motherboard get the 965 oc it, wait for piledriver, a 965 is $110 and will sell easy on craigslist/ebay, with minimal loss if u upgrade.

BF3 is the only 4+ core utilizing game that u mentioned if im right and the 965 with an oc will do great at handling bf3 and prob without a oc, and im not hating on fx 8150, it prob is similar to the 965 in bf3 performance but im not to sure as i have no experience with either, but i bet ud b happy with either or, and i still find it hard to see how a fx 6/8 core is worse than PIIx4 and i3/i5, but i dont think its as bad as most say in performance wise.

Isn't Piledriver on a completely new socket? Going to need a new mobo and CPU.
  7. Piledriver uses AM3+ yet, trinity the APUs use FM2 a new socket.
  8. I would go with the Phenom II X4 965 and overclock it. I would likely skip PileDriver though because it will probably only offer a 10% increase in performance on average, unless you buy a PileDriver CPU that would be significantly more powerful than the X4 965. But that also means dropping more money.

If you are actually thinking about doing the above (buying a powerful PileDriver CPU), then consider the amount of money you are potentially spending for the amount of performance you might get. I don't know what PileDriver prices will be, but you could end up spending just as much money to buy a Core i5-3570k and a Z77 chipset motherboard and end up with less performance than a Core i5-3570k.

PileDriver may give a 10% performance boost over Phenom II / FX. If so, then PileDriver will be just as powerful as the 1st gen Core i3/i5/i7 CPUs. Ivy Bridge CPUs are about 18% more powerful than the 1st gen CPUs.

Mass Effect 3 is not a very demanding game; I believe it uses the Unreal 3 Engine which is pretty modest (like Valve's Source Engine) compared to more modern game engines.
  9. i5 3470. Cheap(er) and cheerful. No need to OC, the day the 34 gets slow is the day you'll need a new PC anyway.
  10. I would rather go with a FX 8120 its cheaper than the 8150 with only 200mhz off the clocks.

If OBR is to go by Piledriver FX8350 is 2600k/2700K level, which he calls crap but whatever he is a internet troll.

Phenom II x4/x6 is better than a competing FX chip in maybe like 5% of tests run other than that the FX is faster, most of those losses are gaming but its not a margin deemed crisis mark, just avoid the FX 6 and 4 generations.

Disable cores 2,4,6,8 and you will get yourself around 5-10FPS for free.
