A push to rein in pay for executives
With proxy season nigh, it will soon be time to tally the chief executives whose 2003 pay was enough to feed and clothe the population of Haiti.
| Quote : "All we're asking is that the shareholders be allowed to vote on the compensation," Steininger said. "And if the CEO is going to be paid more than 100 times the average worker, we want to know why."
|
| Quote : The gap between chiefs' pay and that of lower-level workers has yawned in recent years. J.P. Morgan, the financier, is credited with suggesting that executives earn no more than 20 times the pay of low-level workers. How quaint: A 2000 study by Towers Perrin showed that chiefs at big domestic companies earned 531 times what their hourly employees did, on average |
| Quote : Of course, Silverman could cut his pay to zero and not face the poorhouse. Brian Foley, a compensation expert in White Plains, N.Y., said that from 1998 to 2002, Silverman received $36.6 million in salary and bonus and reaped $223 million from exercising options. He had unexercised options worth $46 million, and his life is insured for $100 million, at a cost to shareholders of $6.5 million. And Cendant will pay Silverman $83,000 a month after retirement.

this is what is wrong with our country. i am not opposed to a ceo making good money, but the salaries and benefits these people get are obscene. and then what makes it even worse is companies say they can't afford things like health insurance and the small benefits yet they can afford to give the ceo a gagillion dollars in salary and bonuses and insurance, etc. makes me sick

Overseas? Dont you mean south of the border?!!
'CEO talking': Why should we pay an American $18 -$20 an hour when we can move to Mexico and pay those shmucks $8 a day. Well still charge the same or more and all the extra profits can go right into my pocket.
Just what GE did when they pulled the refrigirator plant out of Bloomington IN. Saw a news article on what they were paying the Americans and the Mexicans.
Thanks to NAFTA they can do this and not pay any import fees or extra taxes.
According to some, whatever they get, they've earned it... Like the guys at enron.

you can find labor far cheaper oversees, pennies an hour as opposed to dollars an hour. their not paying taxes or tarrifs to import their product.

Wont be long before americans are going to mexico for the jobs.
Whats I think is funney is how people say to "buy American". There is much left thats made in the USA. Hell I saw an American flag with a "Made in China" tag on it. WTF!!!.
People say to buy american cars, dont buy Toyota, Nissan, BMW. etc. Buy an American built car. OK, Ill go buy a Toyota pickup truck. Its built right here in Princeton Indiana. BMWs are made I think in north carolina or south somewhere. The Ford Crown Victoria is built in Canada.
What can you do? Go without things you need/want.
That is the one thing that I have against capitalism and the stock market. It let's a select few get WAY too rich. I mean, why on earth does some jackass CEO, who's not even that special, deserve to earn sooo much more than the workers? You could make the argument that without a good CEO, there'd be no business to reap the profits, but it also goes the other way: without the workers there'd be no businesses to be CEO of.
-------------------------------------------
"Trying is the first step towards failure."
I dunno dude, I mean from a worker's standpoint that is ridiculous. It's a lot of money no doubt that perhaps could be better used. At the same time, this is used to fund private stuff (my dad's business for example is all private funds). From an executive pov, u sacrificed the time to make the money and start up the business. It isn't exactly easy and there is a huge risk. There are times at the beginning when u go w/o any pay and have to pay all costs from ur pocket, but there are (hopefully) good years when u make a bunch. So it is the founder's $$ in a sense.
The one and only "Monstrous BULLgarian!"
There isn't much of a difference in wages for American and Canadian employees. I think of products made in USA and Canada as domestic. The standard of living for Americans and Canadians in general terms is the same.

That Ice storm is coming my way. It's starting already. We're just on the edge of the freeze line. Said we could get some rain if it goes a tad north. Will get a bunch of snow if it stays south. I'm going for south. I'd love to have a foot of fresh snow to ride tomorrow. I don't get that around here very often. So I'm up for it. If it does rain, I'm going out with the 4 wheeler & make a few $$$ hauling idiots out of the ditches. If we get to much ice, sled is studded & 8" carbides on the skis. The Principle's of the Lust are easy to understand. Do what feel, feel until the end
we probably have. i am not against people getting paid for a job well done, but i also take issue with ceo's who get paid obscene amounts of money while they treat the employees of the company like s#$t. i work for sbc and a couple of years ago mr ed whitacre jr took in over 70 million dollars in salary, bonuses and compensation. the board paid him 25 million dollars to ensure that he would the job he was already being paid for. this at a time when they take away as many benefits as they can, slash education, so on and so forth.
The Principle's of the Lust are easy to understand. Do what feel, feel until the end
I'm mixed on the whole thing. For example, it's very tough to argue with Bill Gate's salary. He pulls in billions a year but frankly he deserves it. What then un-justifies another company's CEO from getting paid a lot? As long as they aren't like Enron and doing something fraudulant it's tough for me to tell them that they don't deserve it. These people are leaders, pioneers, or they just worked damn hard to get where they are. We should rewrite the books to make it a capital offense to screw your share holders etc etc like Enron did. The rest deserve to be paid.
You then have Kerry or Edwards saying that they want to tax everyone who makes over $1M to pay for their social programs. I think it's unfair to penalize those that are successfull.

I've got a different take on it all together, myself & I have the benefit of living long enough to learn some things.
The Union Membership spouts the same thing!! CEO's get paid to much. We loose & loose & loose!! They want you to accept what they get for you & everybody else that gets more is no good. It's class envy they perpetrate. Tell me this, what Union has created Jobs for anyone??? None have.
CEO's are in the business of creating jobs that make the economy run. There's the big difference in the way they're paid. If you take that away from CEOs, kiss the standard of living we have, in this country out the window.
I had my first degree at that job & I worked there for 17 years & you know what if I had the Seniority I could get the job that my degree would afford. Until I worked nights for 10 years, I didn't have enough Seniority to get on day shift. I was a staunch Democrat. They owed me & owed me big time. My Dad was there 41 years before he retired. Me, they closed the doors on the place.
So now I'm 38, 2 kids & no job & guess what, my first degree was worthless. That's right worthless. Most of you around here don't understand that education is one of the biggest businesses in the country. They are there to take your money. Most don't understand that fields come & go. Today's education isn't worth much 10 or 15 years after your out of school, unless your in the medical field & I'm not sure of that either.
So I go back to school & get my second degree. Now Guess what, I'm valuable again. I got the experience & a brand new degree. You know the truth though, I didn't learn one thing I didn't already know from my job. I knew more that the instructors. So the schools clipped me for another few thousand dollars to get me employed.
This time I was an engineer. I was considered management instead of Union. I never punched a time clock for them. My word was good enough. I traveled the world for them engineering cars, but I'd fell into another little crack that they had thought of, Contract work. I was a contract engineer for GM. We could talk all night about that BS. Thing is, I negotiated for my raises, my self. I didn't have a Union holding me back this time. I made my way into some really big circles. I've got a patent for GM. That's another story. The year I built my house I got a raise the month that I moved in that more than took care of the house payment on my new house. I was in 3 figures now & thought that I was set for life in my field. I had also turned Republican. I know I could get farther on my own, with my abilities than any Union would ever allow. That's the America I love & want.
Then I was sent to Mexico to hand over the Caviler to there new design house that they had opened. I spent 6 months down there doing my job helping with the transition.
4 months after that GM decided they wanted Designing Engineers now & the design work was going to Mexico, India & China. GM along with Michigan, Michigan Tech. & the State of Michigan got a bunch of money granted to them to start this all mighty Designing Engineer degree program. We were told that if we went to school 4 hours after our normal work hours, for 4 years we'd be able to keep our jobs. Experience & time on the job, meant nothing (I have to add here that GM moved my job out of my city & took it to Detroit, 100 miles each way to work. 1000 miles a week I drove for 5 years to work)!!
There wasn't enough time in the day for me to take that on. They made a list of who would go back to school (Oh BTW it was at my own expense also) & those that wouldn't. I had 14 year invested in that job now.
That was the end of my career. At 51 I was starting over & my degrees aren't modern enough for them. So I was put out to pasture!! That was 2 years ago & I haven't had an offer from our country, yet. I can go to work tomorrow in Mexico or China, but I can't work in the US. I'm looking at starting over again with nothing again at 53 years of age. What do you think my chances are of that??? My engineering degree is no good now.
The young engineers said they would do it. Most of them had student loans up the yazoo form getting through school as it was. Most of them couldn't afford to live at there standard because they were so debt ridden form student loans. They stayed & are paying whatever it takes to just keep their jobs. I've got news for them, give it 10 years & it will happen to them again. Hence me saying education is big business.
There's a couple of thing you ought to pick up on here. No matter what education or degree you have, it will be no good before the end of your working like. As long as you got the money & time the schools will be there to help you. If you don't have the money, they won't have the time for you even though your alumni. I was a honor student Phi Theta Kappa 3.875 GPA on my engineering degree. That's not shabby by any means IMO Now I know no one here has ever herd me mention my academic accomplishments. There's a reason for that. I consider education as big of evil as any corporation that's out there. It's a system that you have to have & can't beat, really, but they are just there to milk the money out of you. I say that because of this. I tutored students while I was going to school to make some money. Most of the students were in the wrong field. As a employee of the school I couldn't tell them they were in the wrong field. They would weed them out. Then they would say, you've just got the wrong career path. Lets change that for you & BTW it's going to take another 2 years of tuition to do that. You can take back a product that's defective, try taking back an education that is absolutely no good or the field is saturated, I want to see that.
Bottom line, expect to keep going to school your whole life & budget for it. Degrees are short lived in the scheme of things. Yea, you'll make more money with an education, but it comes with a high cost, you'll spend a good deal of money to try & keep up with it. Once you've hit 50, it doesn't matter a whole lot, your past your prime & smart as you are, there's someone younger out there, weather they could actually carry my lunch bucket or not. Me, I'll make it, I always have before, but it's getting harder to play the game.
Hope this was helpful to some, I feel like I'm rambeling IMO
Dazzle them with Brilliance, or Baffle them with BS!
I'm seeing a rift starting here, jmycal, snorkius and holygrenade vs. about every logical person in existence
I along with ryan agree with about everything you've posted.
I've beat these guys into oblivion with facts and they still dont get it.
Did you read what happened in that thread where i posted the truth behind the dean 'tax cut' outlook?
Yeah, same old crap the demos have been spitting FOREVER and when someone presents the facts about how much a group of liars they are, they just deny it.
Im starting to think they are just those types of people that if you knew them in real life that they'd never budge and i'm positive they are unhappy, unsuccessful losers. Period.
Theres really no other possiblity.
I am sure you, or ryan could be convinced through facts (as you apparantly already have been) to lean towards the truth.
I certainly have no problem conceding a particular issue to democrats if they are correct but they havent been for quite some time. Whos -really- looking out for me? UM, Me!
Those guys who post this kind of stuff appear to me as very uneducated. They are not intellectuals in any sense of the word.
Instead of posting everyone elses ideas I'd like to see them construct something new, or at least outside of their little secluded box of ideas they live in.
I'll go up against them anytime, as I have in the past.. they just end up looking completely stupid.
If you do remember that other post I referred to above, you'll notice they didnt even attempt to argue against the idea of a flat tax. Though its blatantly obvious that with a post like the one this thread was started with they would be opposed to it.
They dont know anything about anything besides how to hate and b*tch and moan.
Typical far left liberal outlook.
I suggest you all move to Canada with Alec Baldwin if you are so damn unhappy with the system.
You work hard, you get paid.

I had a friend of mine in my earlier days, that we thought was going to become a professional student, he had so many degrees, I was absolutely amazed at him.
He came to my house one day, and from the look on his face was in mental agony, I asked him what was wrong, and he said he'd finally figured out what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, and the career he wanted to go into, I said Man thats great, but why are you so upset you should be happy?
He said, You know all the schooling I've taken, I said yes, We all thought you were going to be a professional student, I know the schools were loving all this money they've been getting from you, I'm glad you finally decided on a career, He said yes but the only problem is, none of the courses cover what I need, I've got to go back to school, I said No!!!! You've got to be BSing me, He hung his head and said No I'm Not, and he had to go back to school about three more years, you talking one upset individual!!!

What you say is very interesting. My degree isn't any good unless I get a PhD. I'm not about to do another 7 years of school for that PhD. That's mostly due to my degree since I don't want to spend the rest of my life doing statistics and grant proposals.
So my options are this: I can stay with my job, which doesn't require any education and I'll probably max out at 100K a year. Alternatively I can stay with the company while I go back and get a masters degree in Engineering and at least open up the possibility of me getting a more challenging and stimulating job that will pay more than 100K down the road.
I either burn one bridge now or I keep them both going. I'm choosing the later. Hopefully it'll be worth something in 20 years but the truth is that you always need more education since times change so fast nowadays. A perfect example is the way it's mandatory for teachers to keep taking classes. It's the right thing to do. Having them pay for it isn't though.
What's not right is the way universities have turned into businesses. I just had some transcripts sent and they charged me $4 a copy. WTF? It's a few pages of paper. If you eat on campus it's like buying food at a movie theater. Buying books was an ordeal since I never walked out of there for less than $500. What we all ended up doing was borrowing books from other students. I didn't buy any books my last couple of years in college.

We put forth facts and intelligent discussions and your response is that no facts can be proven since we haven't seen it for ourselves.

Look, I when I see a 'fact' I will be more than happy to respond likewise. Kinney did not even come close to it. I responded because it's fun to goad an idiot, especially a proud hypocritical idiot. (there I go again, sorry)
I'm not some conspiracy theory freak. I argued with reason that all institutions with power twist 'facts' to serve their own needs. The only response I got was 'Go dig your hole you conspiracy freak...' and some stupid remark about China.
This is typical. As soon as I post something non-conformant to your typical views, the response I get is something about a hole or 'ur an idiot cause I can google 'facts' and you can't' type of response.
All the real points I've ever brought up were thought out by myself using logic and reason with the widest range of info I could find. Perverse excesses hold no interest for me. I would try to change something for the better. Most wealthy powerfull people would oppose change. Easy to have an 'accident', but a compound would improve my chances somewhat.

hmm... and he claims to be reasonable. I really don't see the need for the childish tactics you employ. It is just demeaning.
I don't usually get into conversations with you as you seem unreasonable far right wing. But since you asked for me by name, here goes...
If only it was as simple as you work hard, you get paid. I know people that work two to three days a week and get paid more than what most others get a month. People can graduate with the best qualifications but at the end of the day the job isn't guaranteed. And people can have years and year of experience and their job can go just like that. The truth is it is half chance. You can work the hardest your whole life, even after first class degrees and still live hand to mouth for the rest of your life. Or you could be the dumbest guy out their and be lucky enough to become somewhat well off. RCs post hits a chord. You should read it.
As for the topic of the post about CEOs deserving their salary. A whole lotta CEOs don't really work their way up. They get their through connections, family or otherwise. Just a few weeks ago Rupert Murdochs son got the top seat at BSkyB. Like he deserved? And the situation Rupert murdoch commands. Deserved? Bill gates did work hard, but it was him working smart that got him where he is. No body questions him being at the top (or allowing someone else to have it, as the situation is now). What people do question are his methods, relating to his earnings.
Not everyone at the top gets hugely inflated salaries. Fiorina "only" gets about a million a year. Her salary is kinda deserved, in comparison to countless other companies. At least her company is doin ok.
What isn't deserved is what you see everyday about the company doing crap yet the directors all getting 100 to 200% raises and 6 to 7 figure bonuses. It happens and you know it. Now you cannot claim that is right.

You disrespected us on Pearl Harbor day and then went into this compound mode where you starting saying that you hoped you could build a bunker before we all destroyed the earth. I admit that I find it difficult to take anything you say seriously after all that crap you spewed on Pearl Harbor Day. I told you right then and there that I lost respect for you.
Now I'm willing to let all that slide but I am a little bit annoyed with your tendancy to just post stuff and tell the rest of us that we're all insane despite the fact that we post links and debate it out in the open.
We've gone through this before with Svol. It gets old. You can't just tell us that we're all going to die and dismiss everything that comes out of our mouths without a shred of proof or a link or SOMETHING. Add to that your view of history and your inability to back it up.
Judging from your posts you're Russian or Soviet and don't want the world to see a war like your family did. I don't blame you. However, rational suggestions and debates are far better than your bunker scenario or your idea that none of our links hold any value since we weren't there personally.

Actually its who you know.
But whether this is a communist nation as you guys would prefer, or a capitalist nation... its still, who you know.

Yeah, thats right. I support the NV/AMD/IBM axis of evil.
LOL, though that was your attempt at a comeback it was still funny..
you should change your day job to a comedian.

Yeah, thats right. I support the NV/AMD/IBM axis of evil.
Except in communism you don't have a poor, middle, and upper class. You have poor and super rich corrupt class.
I admit that it's not what you know, it's who you know, or a little bit of both at the very least. I wish they would teach you that in high school. I really wish they would have told me a lot of things that we all have to learn the hard and long way.
Granted, if you're like Scamtron you have no chance of anything and it doesn't matter who you know. You need to have some education beyond the 3rd grade.

To drift slightly from the topi, I don't care to see a communist america any more than I care to see a democratic america. I just don't see how america manages to dictate what other country governments should be judging from how its own government got in. And how the whole system works. Nobody wants to fight for what is right, but what is ok by them. That's what I don't like.

Education, no matter how much we complain about it, is so crucial since no matter who you know you won't be a doctor without the education.
You might be able to be a CEO, but the chances of you being a scientist are pretty slim unless you're Newton or Einstein. Good luck becoming a Judge without a law degree. Your opportunities are severely limited.
However, once you have the education you really need the connections to find the best jobs. Otherwise you'll be stuck without a job or the lower tier jobs.
