Graphics card problem help!!

I am currently building my first PC and i am having a problem when I am trying the external build (outside case)

CPU and RAM and GPU are all installed when I turn motherboard on I get no splash screen on my monitor. I am using a HDMI cable to connect from the GPU and the monitor I just get nothing on the screen. The fan for the graphics card is running and it is plugged into a PCI express slot. I connected my monitor to the motherboard using a DVI cable and got the splash screen someone please help!!!!

Monitors with multiple inputs will have a switch to select the proper one.
Did you switch the input to the monitor from dvi to hdmi?
Sone monitors will do this automatically, others not.
