The 2400 is even a better choice as it is a full quad core and comparing it against a 2500k, it's behind by a little at stock clocks.

The 2400 also has limited multiplier overclocking because it has turbo.

The i5 2400 will be more powerful than the i3 although it still has a locked multiplier like the i3. Only models with the 'k' at the end have unlocked multipliers, i5 2500k for example.

Skitz,

Try this: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1877/3/ where they test some CPUs to drive the 7950.

The 2120 will be able to push the 7950 but not at 100% (the FPS generated is more than enough though).

The 2120 has had several reviews where it is such a good performer for it's price point. I think for the 2120's price, it's a good performer when paired off with the 7950.

if you have a psu & decent enough cooling to do the job i'd spend the extra cash on one of the k series i5's. doesn't really matter which if it's just for gaming, just whichever is best deal atm. i5 2500k, i5 2550k, i5 3570k :D

Why not?

I think that it's a great bargain and provides good performance for it's price. Of course, compared to the 2500k, it falls behind:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/289?vs=288 but like I said, given that it is behind, the FPS generated by the 2120 passes gaming. Note that the benches I've posted reflect the CPUs paired with a 280, not a 7950, but it should be indicative of the CPU's capacity to drive a graphics card.

A good thing about the 2120 is the fact that you are starting off at the entry level and if you find that later (a few months down the road) you require more processing power from applications other than games, you can just simply upgrade to the stronger, beefier, CPUs available to your socket.

It's actually fun when you consider that such a modest processor is capable of good gaming performance.

Open for your thoughts and suggestions.

If the 2120 was able to provide a decent amount of power to push the 7950, what more the 2400?

The 2400 with the 7950 will do fine.

For an entry level processor, the 2120 more than passes :) performance only gets better with every higher CPU you choose above the 2120.

For it's intents (gaming) it is a great match. For more functionality in multi-threaded applications, the 2400 would definitely be well-rounded.

I think that the next question that we should consider is, "what will we primarily using the CPU for?" but considering that you are getting a top tier card, I'm more than sure that you'll be gaming away on your rig :)

Non-k series CPUs can't overclock. That being said, at stock clocks , a 2120 or a 2400 is a very capable driver for the 7950.
