for gaming, pcie 3.0 is not a must have. the 7850 will run on a pcie 2.0 slot fine. pcie 3.0 is backwards compatible with pcie 2.0.

How about PCIe 1.0 or 1.1? Should be compatible but slower, right?

Correct!

Also 3.0 is not required even though they support it. If your about to buy a motherboard I would get 3.0 (every mobo has it now anyways).

However, having 3.0 will not give you a significant increase in speed or anything at this time. It is not yet utilized by games etc because our graphics/cpu are powerful enough for any game. As game tech improves so will the improvements of pci 3.0 which are marginal at best currently.

pcie 1/2/3 are forward and backward compatible. Proper functioning is not an issue.

Current top end cards do not push the bandwidth of even pcie 1.0 to any extent that you would notice.
It takes a synthetic benchmark to detect the 1-3 fps or so difference.

You are good to go with any graphics card you want.
