A FX-8120 or 8150, but this is a bad time to buy one, since Piledriver (the evolution of Bulldozer) will be released in a couple months (maybe as soon as mid October).

Edit: A higher end Phenom II X6 is good for that, as well, but they're not exactly easy to find (new, anyway).

If you are doing editing the FX 8120/8150. Despite a new line releasing relatively soon you will not get drastically different performance some would say 10% better but the FX 81XX are already fantastic performers in the multi threading department.

Yeah, as long as the video editing program and the video codec you use can take advantage of up to 8 cores, then the FX-8120 / 8150 are your best choice.

As for PileDriver, it is too early to say what the performance increase will be over Phenom II / FX. I will hazard to guess no more than 10% since that level of performance increase should not be too difficult to achieve... unless AMD screws up again.

Why are you limiting it to AMD processors?

Maybe he doesn't have $300 + to go and buy a i7 3XXX or one of them Hexcore extreme....ly expensive 2011 chips.

If you are happy to overclock, grab the 20 and clock it up, it will reach the 8150's speeds easily and that saves you a few quid

Maybe he does and nobody mentioned 16 Opterons either. Then again this coulda been someone homework to see if some poor kid would actualy research video editing being able to use many cores and then find AMD opterons. LOL

I don't think Xeons or Opeterons or Firepro's or Quadro's are completely necessary here. In the absence of degree of editing I see these as seriously overpriced options where mainstream DT chips suffice.
