I'm in the market for a new, fast hard drive, and I've seen this "GXP" thing mentioned in some of the newer ones. Could someone explain what this is for me? Make sure to use small words and lots of colourful pictures, cos I ain't exactly a hard drive expert...

Thanks.

Would colourful words and lots of small pictures do instead?

As far as I can tell it's just IBM's way to differentiate their product line, much like models of cars with LX, GT, RS etc

But a search on "GXP" in Google told me that GXP stands for...

a Clinical and Lab Compliance standard
a Dental X-Ray Processor
various Manufacturing standards and techniques

so take your pick, personally I think IBM are targetting the Dental X-Ray market, plenty of margin there....

I think it's just a way for IBM to name their drives.

who knows.... but i do know the difference between GP & GXP
my old 16.8 gig 16.8GP runs at 5400rpm
at the same time they were introducing 14.4GXP's running at higher 7200rpm
so one must assume the X stands for Extra speed, denoting the higher rpm speed.
GP = glorious product maybe?
;)

Well, I don't know what it stands for, but GXP is of course, IBM's hard drive line. The most common right now are the 60GXP and 75GXP, with the 75GXP being marginally more expensive, but with better performace. The IBM 75GXP is arguably the best hard drive on the market. I have several friends who have them.

Actually, I think the 60GXP is the better and also newer drive.

well for me personally i cant reccomend IBM drives enough.
they cost a little more, but ive sure got reliability
my old 16.8GP has survived everything i can throw at it, from going around the world to the 5 time daily win95/98 crashes.

got a 40g 60GXP in my athie 1200C and it rocks too. very quiet and fast & cool running. coolness is important in todays modern hot machines.

The 60GXP is faster than the 75GXP?
You're right. According to Big Blue's website, the 60GXP is the newer, faster drive.
I stand corrected.

*nods*
higher density with same speed = faster, less platters = quieter & cooler
:)

GTO comes from the european term "Grand Turismo Omologato" (Italian, standing for the specifications as fuel capacity and engine displacement, for a class of standard automobiles qualified to compete in various races)

GTP is the same with Performance slapped on the end.

GXP stands for Grand eXtra Performance

Thanks for clearing that up Bkm414. I'm sure the Original Poster will check on this 8-and-a-half year old thread and be delighted by your answer!
