Actually it's just 1 on its own, or +1 in international format. So a San
Francisco number would be entered as +1-415-xxx-xxxx (without the dashes,
of course..!)

US is sharing the code 1 with a lot of other countries in north
America and the Caribeans.

There are at least 20 other countries with the same country code.

But they're all part of the North American Numbering Plan, which means
they share the format 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx, so the code for the US is still +1.
