I'm about to build myself a new HTPC and I plan to order an AM2 Proc and Mobo and MCE 2005. I'm looking at getting the A64 3000+ or the A64 3200+. Since I'm using hardware encoders I don't need that much processing power and I was wondering if I should go with 1Gig of DDR2-667 or the more expensive DDR2-800. I know the memory times can get a little funky and I would like to know which combination of memory and proc would be most effective. I will not be overclocking this project so that isn't even a concern but I would like to get the most efficient combination from a processing perspective. Would one of the Sempron chips be better? Any insight on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

It is also a proc question. Which proc should I go with? Are the A64 chips overkill and I should go with a cheeper Sempron for such a project. Sorry if I wasn't more explicit about that.

I also wanted to get some more information about the funky memory times issues that this processor causes because of the shift to DDR2. Since the memory controller is on the CPU this seems like a good area to address this issue.

Thanks for dismissing/shooting me down.

the lower the timings the better, lower the cas latency the better,
G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) for $80

G.SKILL 1GB (2 x 512MB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) for $129

i don't think DDR2-800 would make a bigg difference although another gig would

so if you wanted 2 gigs here was your looking at

G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2 DDR2 667 (PC2 5400) for $140

the DDR2-800 would offer the best performance with the AM2 socket altough not a bigg increase over 667, another gig would make a bigger difference

get atleast that 3200+, semprons are

You'll have to excuse mpjesse, as he lives underground, and judging by his behaviour in these forums, has no interaction with "real" humans. Therefore he's really crusty.
