I have a WRT54GL and I dont recall having to "install" anything... I guess this is some kind of "setup wizard"... you dont need it. My WRT54GL is working just fine and this machine is Win 7 64 bit.
You dont say what connection you are losing... your WAN link or the link to PC... I guess its to PC? and I guess its wireless? I say this as you cant reallly go wrong with wires.
