This is my first computer and I will be using it primarily for gaming. Is the 7850 even out yet? I looked on NewEgg and couldn't find anything...

Here is what I have planned for my first build.

CPU - Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost)
Mobo - ASUS P8Z68-V/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68
Fan - COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus
RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
Video Card - EVGA 015-P3-1580-AR GeForce GTX 580 (Fermi) 3GB
Hard Drive - Western Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM
DVD Drive - HP 24X Multiformat DVD Burner 24X DVD+R
Power Supply - COOLER MASTER Silent Pro Gold Series RSA00-80GAD3-US 1000W
Case - NZXT Phantom PHAN-001RD Red Steel

Well, the 7850 is $250 MSRP though both models on newegg are $260 and sold out.

The GTX 580 is $370 after MIR (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...) - it's a pretty good deal if you are willing to spend that kinda money on a GPU.

Exactly what i was thinking. If you have the money to afford a 580 then I'm not sure why you'd look at a 7850 over say a 7870 or 7950. At stock the 7850 is about on par with the 6970, however some games it may run a bit under the 6950. I'd say go for the 7870 (~$350) over the 7850, or get the 580 since $370 is a pretty good deal for that card.

However then 580s competition is the 79xx series. Ya can compare performance (with a grrain of salt until we see actual tests) here:

This link is so old it's ridiculous, and is completely bogus as it is based on a GK110 GTX 680, which doesn't exist.

The GTX 580 right now is really in its own niche at $370, so it's worth a purchase. It's very unlikely that Kepler is gonna make a $370 GTX 580 look bad from a single GPU price/performance standpoint.

Why are you choosing between a GTX580 and HD7850???

There aren't even in the same class or price range.

if you can fork out close to $400 definately go for the gts580. however, the HD7850 will do just about everything you need short of maxed AA or crazy eyefinity configurations. either way, they're both good cards, so look in your wallet and let the number of dollar bills/credit limit decide

Is the GTX 580 successor that's supposed to be announced in a few days going to be Kepler that I've heard so much about? What's the big deal about Kepler?

Yes, Kepler is the new line of Nvidia GPU's. Like Fermi is the current line.

see i own a gtx 580 but i do respect amd for their price to performance cards.you should have posted STFU or something like that.i also don't like that 560SLi setup.
anyways once there was a time when we(me and my brother)purchased 580 3gb for $600 but now it's $370 LOL!!!!

I will put my money on ATi HD 7850. That GPU has 2GB Memory, provides Dual Bios function, 860MHz Core, 1200MHz Memory Clock @ 4.8Gb / sec (Bandwidth).

Hi Hellfire, that was a typo. I typed it in by mistake. My bad... I had dinner and I checked my tablet. Got it fixed...

Many thanks for letting me know. :)
