I am waiting for Core 2 Duo to build my first home-built system and wanted a budget gaming system and the CPU is what will limit me. I've read the e6700 will retail for about $570. I can either wait for prices to drop, but how long will that take, or I can buy a case, cpu, and mobo and wait until Aug/Sept to buy memory, GPU, and hard drive.

July 23 is the official release date for Core 2. Prices for Pentium 4/Pentium D's will also drop substancially at that time.

As of right now, I don't personally know of any boards that support Core 2 (Conroe).

Prices probably won't drop on the Core 2 until 1H (probably 2Q) next year, when Intel releases the new Core 2 Extreme.

There are a few boards that support conroe (with the 975X chipset) I believe it was tomshardware or anandtech that did a review on three of em.
