Xbox 360 may not always have a hard drive, confirms Allard

Rob Fahey 12:57 15/08/2005
But whether there'll be a model without a drive at all remains to be seen.

Microsoft's forthcoming next-generation console may not always ship in a
configuration with a hard drive, key Xbox executive J Allard has confirmed,
with developers being warned not to rely on the component for their games.

Speaking in the September issue of US magazine Game Informer, Allard said
that the company isn't yet ready to announce details of possible multiple
models of the Xbox 360, with the presence of a hard drive being touted as
one potential difference between models.

"It's something we're not ready to announce yet," he said. "I don't think
it's a one-size-fits-all [approach] over the next five-year horizon."

Allard's comment may also refer to the possibility that Microsoft will begin
shipping Xbox 360 consoles with HD-DVD drives at some point down the line,
replacing the DVD drive which will be present in the original model of the
system.

However, the hard drive is also certainly up for debate, the XNA boss went
on to confirm.

"We've said [to developers], 'Hey look, don't bank on the hard drive always
being there,'" he revealed. "'There may be a scenario in the future where we
don't want to have a hard drive, and in that case, we have to make sure that
the games that you've created are accessible to the broadest possible
audience.'"

However, at present the official line remains that the Xbox 360 will ship
with a hard drive as part of its basic specification - and it seems more
likely that the difference in configuration at launch will be that some
models will ship with a significantly larger hard drive than the 20Gb
baseline.

Developers will have to take into consideration the possibility of no hard
drive being present regardless of what models Microsoft ultimately chooses
to ship, since the drive is a removable module which can be taken out of the
machine by the end user.

WTF? if Xbox 360 does not always have a HDD, that means developers won't
take advantage of what it can offer, like much faster game loading times
after the inital load. like how Xbox games cached levels.

saving games is not an issue with Xbox 360 because it has internal memory
for that other than the HDD... but the other things, they do matter..
hopefully what Microsoft is planning is not as bad as it sounds.

I am, for the most part, fully supportive of Xbox 360 - I plan to get two
consoles in Nov-Dec... so don't concider this an anti-X360 post like
Blick-Berg-.

It doesn't mean that. It means developers can't rely on it, but can check to
see if one is there, and if so, can use it to cache the games, resulting in
faster loading times (using your example).
It will however make games such as Football Manager 2006 very difficult to
make, not sure how they can program that to not need a HDD...

Um, duh. The hard drive is removable. Thus there's no guarantee every Xbox
360 will always have a HDD attached at any given time. What if you lend it
to your friend to use your game saves or Halo 3 maps or something?

I just hope this means developers can and will make use of the HDD, but have
to have a contingency in place in case a machine doesn't have its HDD
attached. The alternative would be to make it so the 360 couldn't be used at
all without the HDD attached, which might make some people unhappy.

perhaps what they mean is within the next couple of years it may come with
some kind of flash memory, hard drives will soon be obsolete, just look at
the price of the usb memory sticks soon they will be as big as hardrives,
then microsoft can stop the hardrive

but by that point hard drives will be cheap, and there'll be no need to
replace existing hd's with solid state techas it would only serve to
increase production costs.

Hard drives will hardly be obsolete in a few years....or even a few dozen
years.

While flash memory has its applications and its advantages over a hard
drive, I don't think replacing the 360's HDD with a bank of flash memory
is going to happen. Flash is still more expensive than a HDD, and isn't
designed for the constant writing that would happen when caching data from
the slower DVD drive. Especially since flash memory chips can only be
overwritten so many times before they stop being able to retain data
properly. (although, with a planned lifecycle of 5-7 years, this probably
isn't as big an issue...)
