I saw several reviews where people complained that their LCD cracked on
SD400 and SD500 models. Other than that, they seem to be exceptional
cameras with great picture qualicty and the design is just fantastic.
Are their LCDs really more sensitive than other cameras'?

Hmmm . . . my SD400 is just fine. It is very true that the LCD is a larger
proportion of the camera back than older models. In theory, this could mean
it's a bit more vulnerable to damage than some older models. I'm guessing
there would be a danger if you slipped this little guy into a back pocket
and then sat down. I carry mine in the fitted Canon leather case and almost
always use the wrist strap to secure it to my right wrist. I'm very careful
about swinging it about. This is how I handled my S100 and S400 before it. I
never once bumped or slammed either one. When I sold them, they were
virtually like new.
Bye.

I have a SD410. No problems with the LCD so far.
I also have an A80, which looks like it uses a very similar LCD. The
A80 has been dropped at least once on the top left rear corner, hard
enough to dent the thin metal camera top plate. Again, no sign of
problems with the LCD or any other part of the camera.
I used to have an A200. It got dropped while inside its (padded) case a
couple of times. No damage of any sort was apparent.
But do keep in mind that LCDs are generally made of a couple layers of
thin glass. You could likely break the LCD in any of these camera by
pressing on its surface with your thumb. So don't do that - keep all
sources of pressure away from the LCD.

I have always treated my cameras like the precision instruments they are
and never take liberties with them, no trouble so far.

Yep. Mine's on its 3rd lcd. 1st one broke when I put it in my pocket
with my keys so I guess it was kind of my fault. 2nd one broke in a
shirt pocket. No idea why.
Replacement screens cost around $60. It's fiddly to fit them but not
actually that difficult. The screws on the camera are all different
sizes so you need to remember where they came from. Also be careful not
to zap the lcd with static (touch something that's earthed before you
start). There's probably a load of web sites explaining everything
somewhere.
Then fit a screen protector. I just cut a bit of plastic from a cd case
and glued it on. Seems to work so far.

Actually that's the price for the LCD for the S400. The LCD for the
SD400 is bigger so might cost a bit more (and will probably be even
easier to break). I noticed the LCD on mine is made by Sony so I guess
their cameras suffer from the same problem. At least Canon sell spare
parts. I wouldn't buy from any manufacturer that didn't.
