Why do people post messages stating that if you go to a certain site
you will recieve a free x-box 360 or a free ipod. They dont say that
you have to join some stupid con offer thats gonig to cost you more
money in the long run than what the actual free item costs from a
catalogue or shop.....

If you look at the link they post, most of them include a member ID, so if
you DO click and signup, they get credit for it. See, most of these
"free..." scams not only require you to sign up, but 5-10 of your
"friends" as well. Most idiots don't know that many other idiots, which
is why they spam usenet with these misleading and illegal pyramid scams.
