Hey guys. This is only my second build, doing it for a friend. Can't seem to get it to do anything but spin the fans.
CPU: FX4100 / Phenom II 965
Mobo: ASRock 970 extreme3
Memory: Kingston Hyperx 2x 2gb
HD: WD Caviar Green 1tb
Gfx: evga gtx 550ti
PSU: Antec 500
Asus dvd burner

So started off with the fx 4100 in and nothing but the fans would turn on. Tried starting with one stick of memory, same thing. Read somewhere that the mobo might need to be updated for that chipset so I tried switching to the phenom II, same thing. So I figured it must be the mobo. Went and got a new one, started the whole process over. Nothing's changed. Getting no feedback from the mobo's, just fans spinning. No beeps or anything. What am I doing wrong? The 24 pin's in. The 8pin for the chip is in. Got the 6 pin in the gfx. Can't figure it out so I'm turning to you geniuses of Tom's Hardware, please help me!

get access to another gpu somehow and borrow it to see if another gpu works. if one works, then you can basically rule that the gpu is dead.

This is just a general guide to troubleshooting a non POSTing PC.

Take the system out of the case and put it on a non conductive surface (e.g. wood, the box the mobo came in), remove the graphics card, all but one stick of RAM and whatever else you'v got in the PCI slots. Hook it all up to the PSU and Monitor, clear the CMOS. If it doesn't boot, change the RAM with the other one. If it still doesn't work, some part of it's broke. It could be the CPU (check for bent pins), RAM (chances of both being dead are low), motherboard itself or maybe the PSU (grab an old one and see if that works). Also make sure you are grounded when touching the components, its possible your static electricity fried something.

While doing all this, the Motherboard may start beeping at you. The manual should tell you what these beeps mean and could tell you what's wrong with the system.

Hope that works.
