Gameplay Display Issue

Hello,
I'm trying to play Roller Coaster Tycoon on my compaq laptop, but there are black bars that appear on the sides (left and right) of the screen while the game is on. I want to know how to get rid of those black bars. The game doesn't do this on my old laptop. It has nothing to do with the game's settings. It has to do with the laptop. Please help. Thanks

Were both laptops wide screen? Does the game have a resolution that matches your video? Sound like an aspect ratio setting issue.

resolution must match your screen or you will always see those bars, if the game doesn't have the same option as your screen native resolution check for other resolutions at same aspect ration, otherwise some games you can force another resolution via config files,.

no you must set the game resolution to match your laptop's resolution and not the other way, the game must be at the same aspect ration than your laptop. what you are probably trying to do is playing a non widescreen game on a widescreen.

if you can't increase game resolution (some old games don't allow you to do so) look for a fix on the web that will allow you to increase the resolution.

here is something i have found:


With a bit of editing, it is possible to run the game in higher resolutions than 1024x768, including widescreen resolutions. The result will not be stretched, but instead look just fine (see screenshot).

Creating a Custom ResolutionEdit

If you want to play RollerCoaster Tycoon in a widescreen resolution, you will need to edit the RCT.exe with a Hex Editor [1] (create a backup first!). You need to search for these two hex values: "58 02 00 00 68 20 03 00 00" and "20 03 00 00 c7 45 f4 58 02 00 00". In both of them you have to change 20 03 to the new width and 58 02 to the new height. In the game, you need to switch to Fullscreen 800x600 in the options menu, as that is the resolution you customized with this method.

Working ResolutionsEdit
■ 1280 x 720 (16:9): Change 20 03 to 00 05, 58 02 to d0 02.
■ 1280 x 768 (15:9): Change 20 03 to 00 05, 58 02 to 00 03.
■ 1280 x 1024 (5:4): Change 20 03 to 00 05, 58 02 to 00 04.

Higher resolutions won't work, though lower resolutions should be possible.

this is goign to change your game resolution so you can find the same aspect ration as your laptop (16:9), (15:9) or (5:4) this will remove the black stripes.

I downloaded it and tried to extract it like the readme says, and it did allow me to.
any other solutions? Any other links to any other hex editors? I really want to play this game with the right resolution.

I was trying to use the Hex in this video, and tried to follow his directions and got lost. How would I be able to change the game's resolution with this Hex editor? Anyone know?
