hi all. I ended up posting in the nvidia sub-category since there wasn't a moniters one and this is the only section that deals with displays and my card is a gtx, so please forgive me.

Iam having problems with a hd moniter. I think I should tell the whole story so u can give an accurate answer so plz bear with me.

basically I was using this hd 720p moniter for a while, then I started noticing that the text on websites and in windows was looking weird (letters wouldn't appear correctly (an n would look like an r), some letters were bold when they shouldn't be). thought it was a virus, scanned pc with everything --> negative, then finally formatted --> still there. so I thought (as weird as that sounds) may be its the screen. So I used an old 17" dell moniter using a vga cable and behold --> everything is fine.

The problem starts here: when I tried to reconnect my HD screen using the same cable I was using before (DVI-HDMI), it would say no signal but I can hear the pc booting normally. I bought a new cable --> negative, tried the screen on a different pc and its working normally. removed the gpu and connected the dvi-hdmi cable to the mobo (to use the onboard graphics --> no signal.
I tried this pc--vga cable--HD moniter, and it shows the pc booting but when it gets to loading windows, no signal again.

The moniter isn't actually detected in nvidia control panel. tried a different multi-moniter software but it doesn't show up. multi-mon says I dont have multi moniters when both moniters are connected.
I googled the problem and everyone has different symptoms. so what is going on here? can you plz help me?

thanks

just to add:

I have tried a different card (gt 240) using the same dvi-hdmi cable, and behold, the screen works. so I thought its either the drivers or the gpu. so I put the gtx460 back in and reverted to older drivers (285.58) but made no difference. so is it my gtx460 not outputting HD signal for some reason (faulty) or is it something else? can someone help me out here plz? I have been researching and troubleshooting all day but nothing works.

thanks

can someone help me please

after more research I came across a thread with a similar problem and the op said the only thing that worked was flashing the video bios. I found the bios for my card but I am worried b/c I dont know what I am doing here and there's the risk of corrupted bios. has anyone does this before?

this is the list of bios I found: http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?page=1&arc...

here's the thread (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=158757) where the op said that flashing the vga's bios solved the problem.
So is this something you guys would recommend? or do you guys have any other suggestions?
can someone please help me out here? I have been researching and troubleshooting this problem for 2 weeks now and cant find a solution!

here's another thread (http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic167685.html) I found with the exact same problem but no solution, so I am not alone in this.

Thanks

ok so just in case an unfortunate soul experiences the same problem, it turned out that the card was faulty. I also started experiencing freezes and artifacts during gameplay and normal usage. anyway, I was able to get a display from my onboard graphics using both VGA and DVI cables. Also it seems that one of the moniters I was testing has a mind of its own, sometimes it works or won't display, or it displays the desktop much larger than the moniter and I have to move the mouse to the edges to see the rest of my desktop.

I didn't try flashing the bios so I can't comment on that. anyway I hope this thread might be of use to others out there with similar problems.

I don't know how to close this thread, so mods feel free to close it.
