i have 2500k running @ 4.2ghz, 8 megs 1600 ram, corsair 620w ps, gigabyte ga-p67a-ud4 b3 mb....
the mb is PCI Express 2.0 standard ... not 3.0 .... my screen res is 1680x1050 22" lg flatscreen .....
Will a 680 be crippled on PCI Express 2.0 standard? - will that make a difference?
At my res is the 680 too much card?

I really HIGHLY doubt a GTX680 will saturate a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot.

Here is a few charts from a test of a 7970 on PCI-E 2.0 vs 3.0. There is really no difference. I'm not worried on my ASUS P6T board. It's only 2.0.

As far as too much card for your resolution... I wouldn't say yes, but you will not have any issues at that resolution for many games. Some people might say save your money. However, I say go for it. if you have the cash. Maybe a new display is in your future. :D

Actually, on newegg you can buy a Twin Frozer 580 for the about $30 more than most 7870s ($389). Or you could, of course, wait for the inevitable release of the 660 and 670s.

However, you may need to un-overclock your CPU or purchase a more powerfull PSU. On my i5 2500k/GTX 580 build, I couldn't push the CPU further that the turbo boosted 3.7ghz on a Corsair tx650w. And that's using a reference card 580; I believe the Twin Frozer consumes more power(feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). The GTX 680 consumes far less power than it's Fermi cousins though, so if you have $500 and are willing to wait until they are in stock again, I would definitely go with a 680!

humm - never considered that overclock issue - thats a big concern ..... sounds like i'd need a new power supply with the 580 to keep the overclock -- thats the last boost i needed, 680 it is ...........

by the way i have 2 great responses to my questioins, this one and the first one from jay2tall......i couldn't
select the best ans

well i managed to find another issue....i thought i'd run a bf3 test for future comparisons when the 680 arrives....so i cranked the settings to ultra on my old 275 ftw ....then to high and medium - back and forth between settings to see the diff ---- and i can't see a big difference ( strangely i do get playable settings on ultra with some dips to around 25 fps ) .... would the ultra display i'm seeing using my card be the same ultra i'd see on the 680?

BF3 is better optimized than many games, and relies more on textures and lighting that polygons to present their great visuals. The main differences from a 275 to a 580 or 680 is that they have DX11. This won't really affect games like BF3 so much, but games like Metro 2033, or Crysis 2 use it to great effect. Really, if you're satisfied with your 275, than you can wait but games are only going to get more and more demanding.
