Just wondering what kind of performance increase I would get, if any, by switching from a 3gb gtx580 to a gtx680, specifically for rendering in 3ds max. Im not planning on using the card for gaming very much. Im asking because I just built my PC, and thinking to RMA the graphics card, and get the 680, because now the price dropped significantly on the 580 that I just bought. Is switching cards worth the hassle?

intel i7-2700k
nvidida gtx580 3gb ddr5
intel extreme desktop board p67 b3
32gb corsair dominator ddr3 XMP

Hmm the 580 is already a decently powerful GPU. The 680 wouldn't be much of an upgrade for you, especially if you do not game at all.

My vote goes for keeping your GTX 580. It's not worth the hassle of upgrading to.

Adding another 3gb GTX 580 will cost about $600. Since the GTX 680 is not a good compute card, I would guess that your performance would decrease in 3ds max if you were to switch. Honestly, I'm not clear if 3ds max uses the compute capabilities of the video card, but the GTX 680 is definitely a card for gaming.

Guessing by your cpu, you don't use the gtx 580 just for gaming. I would wait until the gk110 nvidia gpu's come out later this year.

thanks. i did some research on the compute abilities, and it seems the gtx 680 would be a step backwards for what im doing. thanks for all the replies

What research did you do? I am using 3 ds max and need a new screen card. I am heading to the 680 but I heard the 580 might be better. I just can't find a reason why?

GTX 680 is a gaming only card, it's release was to just to put the HD 7970 in it's place but only in the gaming sense.
it's strong point is not computation.
Thanks for the feedback. I will try the 580!
