Installed a new PSU, suddenly my computer's performance is awful

Edit: This seems to have magically solved itself. Problem disappeared into thin air without having done anything to fix it.

The old PSU was an OCZ MXSP 700w, my new one is a Seasonic X-Series 660W 80 Plus Gold.

My specs otherwise are

ASUS ASRock H55M
ATI Radeon HD 5770
Intel Core i5 750
4GB of RAM

It doesn't seem like dropping 40 watts was the problem, but I don't know what is. I'm experience an extreme drop in framerate in video games, longer load times for pretty much everything, and in general it seems more sluggish.

The framerate drops are basically from 60 FPS to 20 in some situations. Games that I never knew to drop below 60FPS are now running poorly.

When I first booted up, I got a bluescreen pretty quickly (I had never had one before that on this PC). Never got one since, but it got kinda weird. My system time changed to August 8 2010, and I started getting a warning message in Google Chrome when trying to visit google about the certificate (?), also it said only 2GB of my 4GB of RAM were usable (that fixed itself after a restart however).

Does anyone have ANY idea what this might be? Did I screw up something inside my PC when I was doing all of this? Is this PSU inadequate?

More about : installed psu suddenly computer performance awful

Did you plug everything in correctly? Did you knock something loose?

I think I did, at first I wired it incorrectly and it wouldn't start so I went back to my local Canada Computers where a guy there showed me what was wrong with the wiring and I fixed it. Supposedly it should all be good now.

I've looked over the connections multiple times and I can't figure out what might be wrong, if anything is.

try resetting the CMOS maybe. clear your BIOS and let it rescan your system

I just tried that. When you say clear my BIOS/etc., is that a second and separate step? Sorry, I'm not really tech-savvy

Anyway, resetting the CMOS didn't really do anything for my problem. : (

Just a thought, but maybe you should put the old power supply back in?

Not the worst idea I've ever heard. I'm far too tired tonight to do that, but I'll try it tomorrow. At least then I know if it's the power supply or something else.

A power supply should never cause the problems you're seeing; especially such a ultra high quality power supply such as the seasonic x series.

At worse; a bad power supply will cause random crashes / freezes and/or not booting.

Seems like something is up with your actual system. Put old power supply in and boot it up to see if it's fixed. If it is fixed ; request a RMA and get another one. A defective X series psu is very rare though it does happen. If the same problem still occurs with old power supply; something is definitely wrong with your system.

Try reseating CPU, RAM and GPU. I'd also give the old PSU a shot. If it is the new PSU, it could be a faulty unit not supplying enough power to the components. Then I'd RMA it and get another PSU of the same model.

First: The Seasonic X650 is more than sufficient for your system. In fact a good quality 400W PSU is more than sufficient for your system.

This sounds more like a driver/software issue than a PSU issue. Is it happening in every game or just some games? Have you tested performance in benchmarks? Do you have the most recent drivers and all Windows updates installed? Were any driver/Windows updates installed prior to the poor performance starting? Have you checked for any errors in the system event log?

As far as I am aware, my drivers are current.

It is happening in all games.

I have not yet used any performance benchmarks.

As for the system event log, where can I find that?

I'm not sure what kind of solution that would entail.

Wish I knew how to reseat the CPU, because I feel like if it's anything, it's the CPU, though I really don't know.

If I took this into a place to hand over to someone with a little more experience to figure out, do you think they could resolve this? Money isn't an issue here (except in the sense that I can't buy a new computer)

Open the start viewer, type event, hit enter, look in the system and application logs, hit filter on the right side and filter by error, then by critical. Anything stands out? Also check your temps with Hwinfo and reliability monitor.

Okay, this is going to sound really weird, but I took my computer in to Canada Computers. They ran a bunch of diagnostic tests and phoned me up four days later to tell me that they couldn't find anything wrong with it.

I was kind of pissed off, to be honest. I was sure that I'd never find out what was wrong.

I took it home and lo and behold they were actually right. The problem is gone.

I have no idea what caused it or what fixed it. Now I just get to hope that it doesn't come back.
