Idiots!!!

That's one of those European tow hooks that got mandated here in the US because of Europe with the jerk strap hooked on. We fought tooth a nail to keep them off cars in the US just because of this kind of thing. However the Government thought it was a good idea IMO.

Some day I'll tell you some of my engineering nightmares I worked with at GM & the Government's meddling!!!

Didn't bother the truck though did it?? It has a real bumper on it with a frame, not a unibody!!

Why should they??? The car companies put on that nice little hook for you called a tow hook. It tells you that you can't use it to pull the vehicle in the owners manual, but then again who reads them??? Nope we heard about this all the time after we had to put them on our cars. After Europe mandated it, should be good for the rest of the world, Huh??

Samething, almost with daytime running lights. Why Canada mandated it for there country. Being GM sells almost as many cars in Canada as the US, with parts management & all, we'll just put them on American cars for you as well. (This one wasn't mandated, GM got it's tit in the ringer over this one though).

It started out that the power to the vehicle with all the mandated safety equipment that we're flat out of power to run everything. So a Power Boost Module had to be added under the hood. Ever look under a hood of today's cars?? Where you going to get a box the size of a cigar box under the hood, let alone the wiring harness to run it. Then the Headlights were burning out before GM wanted them to. Idea #2. Reduce the power to the headlights during the day as they don't need to be as bright, thus the bulbs last longer. We had to mount a resistor on the tie bar, that got to something like 300 degs while it was operating. We affectionately called this resistor Hot Finger, because that's what it looked like.

There wasn't room for it there, but there was no place else to put it. The airbag sensor is in the very same place. So now we're fighting for real-estate for Hot Finger with the airbag people & they get there way. So after about 1 1/2 years of packaging, testing & validating, we got our Canadian daytime running lights.

Something that was supposed to come along free for the ride, ended up costing $450 per car. So the new car buyers got to shell out that money for nothing that was never mandated!! Think about that as you drive around during the day & see all the headlights on. The ole Skinny one had a hand in that fiasco IMO

Engineering fiasco's, I've got a thousand of them!!

I got a Jeep Wrangler, and when I pull someone out of the snow, I make sure that they have a clear path and I have a good spot to hook that won't screw up their bumper. Also, if it doesn't come with a gentle tug from the Jeep, I give up and tell them that I tried...

Exactly what I was wondering. They weren't the brightest people. The best part of the video is the sound of the crunching plastic as it gets ripped off.

Aubie, you best hope that you don't get a whole lot of snow, because someone might come over and try to pull your truck out of the front yard. 5 - 6" of snow should cover those concrete blocks and make them invisible!

Good Idea, but it's snowing to hard for that. I wouldn't be able to keep the camera dry out there today.

I was out in the 4x4 a bit ago & cars are just getting off the road & going home. That's unusual, really.

I'm just now getting dressed to go out & pull the cover off the sled to go to the gas station to fill it up for a ride.

First of all, use your contacts to get me a job, I'm a CMU grad with a BS in Industrial Technology Management, for concentrations in "Mechanical Design and Engineering Graphics" and "Automotive Technology". I'd be damned fine for assisting in design considerations.

Now, you talk about unibody and so forth. My vehicle is Unibody, has a FULL FRAME, and uses a SUBFRAME SYSTEM! No, it's not a race preped muscle car. What is it?

Just an ordinary Astro. It has a full body length frame welded to the floor with a much less stout front drop out assembly holding the engine and front suspension. You'd think it weak, no? I took the rear off an S10 Sport with my GRILLE! w00t.

It has these handy threaded holes, thinking about mounting two hooks for when I go down trails, except that they'd drag. Oh well.

Here's an engineering Q for you: Why not have a separate circuit to run the DRL's in series instead of parallel to increase the resistance and thereby decrease the output? It could be autoswitched when the headlights are turned "on" to eliminate the crossed circuits.

Hey if you want to go to work in Toluka Mexico, no problem, I can get you in there at GM's design house tomorrow, if you can run Unigrapics. I can't even use my contacts to get myself work in the US IMO

Now a Astro isn't a car, it's a truck. At least in design. Trucks can beat a lot of validation & don't have as strict of standards as cars. That's why they are pushing SUV's. Company's can get away with a lot by calling any vehicle a truck. It's not the American's love of SUV's, It's the Company's love of not having to jump through so many hoops to sell it, like a car. Last thing I did was the new Saturn SUV. What a POS. There's a case where the laws & validation was stretched to the max. GM said it was a truck, LMFAO!! Do you see them advertised as trucks? Thing has axles the size of my little finger. You tell me that's a truck. Government bought it though.

Don't take that to GM with you. You'd be labeled as an out of the box thinker & be mover to the left out of the main stream for that. No good ole Hot Finger was an ole 60's, carry over design. Hey no tooling, no validation & Delco is ready to supply them. End of story. That's the way a lot of it's done. We fought that battle all the time. I could always find smaller parts in the Competitive Assessment Area ( that's where they buy competitors cars & take them apart & lay them on a table the length of a foot ball field for you to asses) that were smaller & our competitors were using them. But Delco didn't have them & wouldn't tool them. Your very limited like that. You pretty much take a POS & make it work. Not the engineering you see advertised in car ads IMO

If you want to see my patent, PM me. You can find it on the web, but it has my name & address on it. Not going to post a link here with it. It's self locking upper radiator mount. Took 5 years to get it & was out of production in 1 years run.

BTW, you know a switch can be made to turn one thing off and another on simultaniously...a light switch could disconnect the serial headlight circuit and connect a parallel one simultaniously. And without wasting power on a resistor...perhaps increasing CAFE...OOOPs, I'll never get anywhere thinking like that:(

You do know that the PT Cruiser is considered a minivan by the EPA didn't you? That makes it a truck. It's economy is averaged in with DC's truck line to raise their CAFE.

Now you and I know that the PT Cruiser isn't a minivan (it got that rating with fold flat cargo area), and that most minivan's aren't trucks. In fact the only 2 minivan's I can think of that really are trucks are the Astro/Safari and the Aerostar. That is, if you can call the Ford Ranger a "truck", lol.

It's a good thing you didn't go to GMI. We had students from GMI, every summer as assistants. After seeing what we did, some wanted to change there field a bit. But GMI was very narrow, but good. Biggest problem for them, the credits earned at GMI were non transferable to another school. They would have to start over again to do it. Most GMI students were execs. kids.

I do know about the switch you talked about. It's just engineering & the limits put on engineers.

Funny you should mention PT Cruiser. That was designed in , you guessed it, Toluka, Mexico. Yes, it is a Neon. To tell you the truth, PT Cruiser might have just saved DC, but there not out of the woods yet. The DC guys stayed in the same hotel as we did. You go to Toluka & you will see businesses there that used to be here. All big company's as well. I could talk to you all day about what has gone down there.

One of the big benefits that the Mexicans got at Toluka was a free catered lunch. Yea, lunch. With the living standards down there, food is a big thing. GM felt that a well feed employee was a productive employee!! So they set it up that way. It's so well received that the Mexicans will do almost anything to work overtime, to be able to get in on second shifts lunch. That way they had 2 free meals a day. These are friggen engineers for christ sakes. However there was no discount on a new car for them. Most of them can't afford a car. Several that had cars, they were Toyota Taxi's. That's right, they drove Taxi at night to make ends meet.

Sad to say, we can bit-h cry, wine & moan, that business is never coming back to the US. Breaks my heart, really. I loved my job, but it's gone. I believe we can thank the Government & the Green Winnie's for that. First time I heard Service Society was 10 years ago, but that's exactly where we're headed. UAW is history, they just don't know it yet. We need a country that is so squeaky clean form any form of pollution, that businesses that manufacture anything, pollute to much. EPA will get then & eventually, they'll go south or somewhere else in the world. That's so ironic to me. After all the $$$$ that have been spent on pollution, I still can't swim in the Grand River here in my town. So to me we're barking up the wrong tree. But it's been decided we're going to a Service Society & that's what is going to happen, in the long run.

If you want a job that can carry you through your life & your in your 20's, get into health care. That's where the moneys going in this country. It's sad to me. I've been in the auto industry my entire life, racing & wrenching is my life, sad to say it's going to be a different world for my Grandson. Better or not, he'll have to decide. He won't be doing what his Grandpa & Great Grandpa did. Sad, real sad to me.

A bunch of the guys I used to work with, that are in the same boat as I am, have talked about building our own car. A nitch car like the Prowler. I know the talent that can pull it off in a heartbeat. We know all the vendors & validation. We've looked into it a bit & the thing that has stopped us so far is money. Ungraphics licensee is & 30,000 a pop last I knew & we'd need a min. of 10. We figure 3 1/2 years to do it. We could have a prototype in 1 year, but the validation would eat up the rest of it. We can't lay out that type of $$$$ in the hope our car sells & we can recoup our investment. If you know anyone that wants to bankroll such a thing, let me know, I'm up for it.

Lake racing this weekend IMO

Same thing my Unigrahics education, engineering training & the hundreds of hours I put in with in house training 14 years on the job is getting me!

I'll tell you this, get the DRE (Design Release Engineer) degree & your in like Flynn. That is the people they want. After all they spearheaded in the schools I mentioned & that's who there hiring. Right wrong or indifferent, that's where the bear sh-t in the buckwheat & that's the way it is.

BTW A DRE is a clerk really. Your job would be to take the designs from Mexico & China & put it in the system. That's it. No travel, no proving grounds, no vendor oversight, just put it in the system & kick it off. That's why I turned it down. I've never been a clerk, I had clerks that did that for me. They let 1500 engineers go because of it. That was in the plan as well. Get pissed off & they'll leave. Traditional engineering at GM in the US is a thing of the past. But it makes good commercials. I love the one about GM being a people company!!

Funny thing, Toyota, Honda, BMW, etc all produce cars in the U.S. because it's more expensive to produce them overseas. But GM has to produce them in Canada and Mexico. The reason of course is that U.S. plants for foreign manufacturers don't have the UAW, and the UAW is unionizing themselves into oblivian.

So instead of your group going into producing a unique product, why not produce a modification of an existing product? Callaway is doing good!

It's not cheaper for an auto company to build their product in Canada.
We have the CAW. Why? Because the UAW ignored the rights of the Canadian Auto Worker.
Honda and Toyota assemble cars in Canada so they can sell their products at a competitve price in Canada. It's a way to avoid tarrif taxes.
GM, Ford and Chrysler are not seen as foriegn companies in Canada. We think they are as much Canadian as you think they are American. Why? Because in the past those companies bought smaller Canadian auto companies and the rights to use their patents. The same would apply to Australia and Great Britian, etc.
Americans are not the only people who invented automobiles.
Why are we losing jobs to Mexico? Low Tax and Cheap Labour = more money for greedy Detroit auto execs. Companies owned by stock holders do not think twice about [-peep-] their employees. That will never change.
