Vsync, How bad is it.

I have been watching many gameplay and benchmark videos on youtube and most people seem to argue that vsync is bad and that they never use it.

It is a problem for me since for some reason I am getting terrible screen tearing in almost every game that I currently play:
Cod MW3
Crysis
GTA IV
Mirror's Edge
It is getting to the point where I have no choice but to use vsync and deal with frame rate issues, and since I have an old GPU, there is no option for the new adaptive vsync either.

My question is that since most people do not use vsync I guess frame tearing is barely an issue for everyone else, so is there an issue with my system of GPU itself?

Oh and one more question, why is it that MW3 is limited to 50fps with or without vsync and Crysis (and Crysis Warhead) run only at 50hz so in theory they are limited to 50fps as well
