LAN Box or Laptop?

Hello,
I would really like a gaming laptop to run BF3, Diablo 3, etc.. maxed out for no more than $2,000, but I know I can save money on a desktop system but I am just really turned off by another desktop. I was thinking about building a LAN Box, but would it give me the performance I need in the small form factor and would I really see a big price savings over the gaming laptop?

You will always build a better PC than a laptop with equal or less budget.
