BF3: Resolution, Video Ram, FPS HELP!

Hey guys, I have an old Sapphire Radeon 4870 with 512mb video ram. I am currently playing at 1920x1080 resolution at low settings getting around 60-90 fps (depends which vehicle and such); sometimes is drops to around 30-40 when I am sniping in some places.

I have another monitor with native resolution 1600x900. Will I be able to play at Medium settings at the resolution? Assuming I am using the same Graphics Card with the same settings, what performance boot will I recognize? Is the Video Ram the bottleneck here?

OVERALL QUESTION: Will I achieve constant 60fps at 1600x900 at low or medium settings?

AMD Phenom x4 ii 955 3.4 GHZ
Corsair H50 Liquid Cooling
Corsair 8GB DDR3 Memory
Sapphire Radeon 4870 512mb
600w Coolmax Power Supply
64GB Zalman SSD
250 GB 7200rpm HDD

With a game like that uses a lot of high resolution textures, extra video RAM should help, although to what extent I can't say. I can give you a comparison however as I have a laptop with a mobility 5870 which is roughly equivalent to a desktop 4870 and it runs pretty smoothly at 1600x900. Granted, I haven't actually looked at the framerates I was getting but it was silky smooth at medium settings and that resolution. I also have 1GB of video memory. Of course an obvious choice would be to upgrade your card but judging by your post it seems you want to try and make what you have work for you.

I'm not sure that comp is gonna get you minimum framerates of 60fps at any worthwhile resolution. I do imagine you could bump a lot of settings to medium if you dropped to 16x9 though.

Battlefield 3 is one of the few games I know that use more than 1GB of VRAM on my 6950s at 1080p. The 4870 is still a fairly powerful card, my friend has a 4890 1GB and can play on high at 1080p with 40-60fps, so I would say that 512 just isn't enough. That said, you should be able to get 60 at 1600x900. In any case, when sniping even I get 20-30fps (maxxed) when I get 90+fps normally, so I think that might just be something that needs to be optimised.

I think that CPU is gonna keep him from 60fps more than anything.

WHAAATT?! 3.4 GHZ Quad Core not enough   ? Can you name some CPUs that can get me 60fps :bounce:  ? I would be shocked if this is true :??:  .

People who Battlefield 3 with Ati radeon hd 4xxx have the same problem... besides bf3 is a powerful game and i think 512mb vram is too low...

Do you think with I would get better FPS with Radeon 5570 :heink:  ? It has 1GB Video Ram and supports Direct x 11.

Probably not... BF3 is a power hungry game you will need a 6670 to play it in low to medium setting in 720p at a decent 45 fps
