I have a 955 running at 3.8 ghz. I have had it for a while and to be honest I still feel like its really fast. I really dont NEED to upgrade but I have the upgrade itch again ( happens every 3-6 months). I have been beating my head trying to think of something to upgrade but I already am running an SSD i have 2 tb of storage running 12 gb of DDR3 , ( albeit 1666, guess i could go faster there) and 2 1gb 6870's in crossfire. Ive been looking at the FX4170 alot and I know with my board I could push it to 4.5 or faster on air with my monster heatsink but Im not sure I will see much of a difference and I wont get the upgrade itch scratched if it doesnt make some difference to me. Do you guys think I will see much of a difference with the fx4170 over what I have? Oh and yes I am a gamer. Please dont ask what type I dont discriminate.

Ouch so what your saying is dump the board and the cpu and go intel. That could make my upgrade itch burn a hole in my pocket though lol. I thought if you did alot of gaming the fx4170 was better than the 8core .

no im saying if the itch burns enough then it'll burn ur pocket with intel lol
im saying that the fx quad cores are not great gaming cpus compared to a phenom 955 and higher. A fx 8 core is what is comparable to a phenom ii quad core, try to hold the itch off long enough for piledriver, it should make a reasonable upgrade from the phenom. and if piledriver blows well it should have a good resale on craigslist lol

The 955BE with a solid overclock is as good or better then the FX-4170. If you really have the upgrade itch, take it over to Microcenter, you can pick up a new Intel Core i5 3570K and ASRock Extreme4 for like $260. That'd be a upgrade worthwhile.

overclocked no, not a chance. stock yes because the 4170 is a higher stock than the 8150 (hence the 70)

in multicore games, again not a chance in hades.

my own testing with bf3 on 6970 CF, 41xx = 40-80 fps, 81xx = 80-120 fps, mostly 120. 64 player map of course. drop down to a 4-player map and its pretty even, past that the 41xx loses ground quickly.

also consider the actual cpu and how its designed. the 41xx i a dual module cpu, where a module according to AMD is 80% of a dual core cpu. hence the 41xx is only 80% as efficient as a true quad core 9xx phenom.

conlcusion: wait a month, should see some 83xx numbers.

I agree, if you wanted to stick with AMD wait for the next batch of CPU's

otherwise i would personally switch to intel if you want speed, AMD even stated they arent going to be in the race to be fastest anymore, they are aiming for efficiency and they seem to be putting a lot of focus on their APU's
