Sound card with surround sound speakers?

Hello every one i have a pair of astro headphones capable of 7.1 surround sound, i use them on the xbox witch is 5.1 Dolby digital.
i am getting my first gaming pc soon, and i wont to be able to use my headphones to the best of there abilities, i was wondering if i need a sound card to be able to use the 7.1 dd surround sound. the mother board i am looking at has a optical drive. but has built in sound will that be sufficient

The built in sound should be at least 5.1 capable. Take a look at the boards 'features' or download the user manual and look thru there.
