Network over phone cables?

Hi all,

I moved to a new rented house (meaning I can't really replace existing wiring).
My house has only one cable socket in the living room, so I hooked up my cabel modem and my wireless router overthere.
I've setup my computer in a different room and tried using a wireless adapter to connect to my network.
On a best day I get maximum speed of 4 MBit/s. On most days I'm thankful if I get 1 MBit/s.

Now for the question itself.
I have an RJ11 phone jack right next to my cable socket and another RJ11 phone jack right next to my computer.
I don't have a working phone line on these wires, so they are basically unused.
I was thinking, is there a way to use these as an ethernet lan?
Is there an adapter which I just plugin into the RJ11 and it exposes RJ45 on the other end? I couldn't find such an adapter online.
Will I get better speeds by doing that?

Thanks,
Joe.
