External Hard Drive won't mount

I have an old 500GB External MAXTOR HD that crashed and won't mount. I need to get the files from it. I'm on a Mac and was deleteing and moving some files around on it and shut it down without unmonting it and got the message hard drive may be damaged copy all files off of it then reformat. So I started to copy files and it froze up. When I restarted it would show up on desktop but did show up in "Disk Utilities" on my mac but only the name MAXTOR shaowed up. Still couldn't access itto take off the files help.
