Your question

Would the GTX 680 be badly bottlenecked by my CPU?

Hi, so I'm looking at a GTX 680 for my current computer as the graphics card I have in my system at the moment (HD 5450) is very weak and can't play any of the games I'd like to play at medium - high settings :(

The problem is that my CPU might be too slow to keep up with the new graphics card, so would it be a huge waste of money?

CPU: AMD Athlon II X4 640
Motherboard: ASRock N68C-S UCC

If it is a major bottleneck, what graphics card could I go for which can run games like skyrim, battlefield 3, crysis 2, etc at 1080P, with high-max settings with at least 30-45 FPS, and isn't massively bottleneck by my cpu?

Thank you!

Depends on the game, though if i think about it I dont know of any games that wouldnt get at the very least 50 fps with your cpu and a 680. The games that are more cpu heavy usually are fine with any modern quad-cores (like tf2, bf3 and gta4). In case you didnt know you wont need something as expensive as the 680 to run those games at high settings, however a 680 would give you lots of room to last much longer of course.

So just for example, if I bought the MSI GTX 680, would I get around 60FPS with my setup on ultra settings?

What would be another alternative GPU?

Im not certain about 60 fps at ultra in bf3 with a 680 and that cpu, as all the benchmarks with a 680 use much faster cpus. But if i had to guess id probably say likely.

However bf3 still looks really good compared to other games even at medium and high which the popular gtx 560 ti can do for half the price of a 680 and is plenty capable at max settings for every other game at 1080p.

Well I have enough money to get the GTX 680, but I'm just worried about buying it and then having it under-perform. I'd like to see close to or slightly above 60FPS in all of the latest games (despite my cpu) at 1080P with maximum settings, so I doubt the 560 Ti would give me that.

Get the GTX680 and OC you cpu - this will keep you happy for a while. Save some money for a cpy/mobo/ram upgrade. By that time Ivy and z77 will be out and you can make a decision how to best upgrade the rest of your computer.

I bought a gtx 680 just waiting for it to come in. I have a phenom amd quad core 955 BE 3.2 clocked at 3.5 will that handle bf3 ultra settings 60 fps you think?

Not certain but most likely will be able to.

Hey,
Yeah a 680 wouldn't do the best with that CPU. Here is what I would do, get rid of your CPU and Mobo and get these:

CPU:
i5 2500k 3.2Ghz (I got 25fps more when I got this with my GTX 460)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
- $15 off w/ promo code EMCNGHA32, ends 4/4

Mobo: - MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A ATX SIZE Case and NOT JUST A MICRO ATX!!!!!
ASRock Extreme 3 Gen3 Z68 (This is the best Mobo or the money, has PCI 3.0, USB 3.0, 2 PCI Slots x8 x8, -for SLI, and a 1155 socket if you want to upgrade later)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

GPU:
GTX 560 (This card is fantastic! You should get 60fps on Battlefield 3 and Skyrim with this card and the other items. Plus if you want to upgrade higher, you can get another one of these babies and run 2 of them at the same time in your comp :D

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

Total: $561.43 (With Shipping/Tax)
This is about the same price as a 680. You would get better performance if you were to buy this then if you were to just get a 680.

A GTX 680 is about $550(with tax/ship), you can spend that same amount and get better performance. If you don't know how to install a motherboard/cpu, look it up, it will be very useful in the future.

I already got my gtx 680 for 509 shipped. It actualy works great I get 60 to 80 fps on ultra. I need the extra vram for my PC so I am better off just keeping my 680. I gave the CPU a 10% overclock in bios auto profile and it seems to work great. Thanks for the help tho
