Hi, I'm looking for a server or a NAS that can handle the needs of a small production studio. There will be about 5 workstations running 3D and video editing software and a render farm. We mostly deal with 1080p .exr image sequences so we need good bandwith and great storage capacity.

Any directions where to look at?

(+/- $3000 budget)

Thanks

Are you concerned with speed or reliability more?

You could take a look at the QNAP TS-1079-PRO-US which should provide more than enough space, and capacity for your needs. Anything more heavy duty is out of your price range. Note that the $2,498.95 price tag does not include the cost of the 10 or so drives needed to fully populate the NAS.

Thanks for your answer,

To be more precise, we need a server to run our software licenses and storage with high speed access. At the moment, we have a LaCie 5big storage server but its 100mb/s doesn't meet our requirement anymore. We need at least 1000mb/s, so yeah the main concern is speed.

QNAP products seems a good option, thanks for the hint!

If high IOPS and access speed is one of your requirements it may be worth looking at an iSCSI solution, QNAP and Iomega offer good reliable products.

The only issue with the QNAP is that it is storage only, it won't handle software licenses/license distribution. However, a true server won't have anywhere near the capacity of the QNAP so would need to find a happy medium in terms of price for both devices.
