Wich is the better pick you think ?

Amd x2 4200 or Amd opteron 165

this will be on a system that is fairly good for o.c and will be used for gaming.

It's Quite Obvious that Opteron 165 Would Easly, Overclock into a range of 2.6 to 2.8Ghz, That's what we're getting from Everyone that owns a 170-165 Opty. On "Air" btw only on air it gets to those ranges.

Woops i edited it eh^^ i myself am waiting for Conroe Cuse the Opty 170 i'm gongi to make is gnig to be about the same cost as a Conroe so I'm going to see which one to Buy you know biggest "bang for the buck"

My Conroe Rig

Intel D975XBXLKR Intel Socket 775 ATX Motherboard

CNR-E6600 otherwise CNR-6700 If Uncle can get me a deal

or an Opteron 165 or 170 Rig Depends on What how much overclocking i want

AMD Opteron Dual-Core 170 2.0GHz

Asus A8N 32-SLI-Deluxe

opty all the way....i built one for a customer once and with a thermaltake big typhoon, they got it to 3.13ghZ stable (but thats with 5 additional case fanas). The optys are also a lot better for gaming, and the larger L2 cache (1mbx2) as supposed to the 4200+ (512kbx2) gives it bigger advantages in multitasking.

Sorry for a bit of a hijack, but this is my question exactly too.
I have an MSI K8N SLI-F and a MSI 7900GT, and am looking at processors now.
Obviously 939, and i am looking at the opteron 165/170 vs 4200, with a small bit of overclocking, stock fan, 2x standard case fans in a standard case.
Which should i get, im sure it will be Opteron again, but everyone mentioned overclocking.
Also, what disadvantages do Opteron have over Athlon, both 64, both Duel Core?

Awesome.
Ive been told this series of opty's is eating into the x2 athlon market, maybe not good.
What about a 170? isnt much difference in price and has a higher multipyer and clock speed.
And what about temperature compared to Athlon? what does a stock 165 run at, and what does a stock 170 run at?

Opty 165 is 1.8gig 170 is 2.0 gig

Moderate OC the 170 has a higher multiply.

Depends on what you want for the 75$ diff.

As far as heat...Opty is cooler.

Boxed Opteron also has a nicer cooling solution than the X2....at least it used to....

also...

Newegg still has them in stock...no need for callin anyone.

"and i am looking at the opteron 165/170 vs 4200, with a small bit of overclocking, "

If your budget will handle it, look at the 170 or even a 175, as some MSI NF4 mainboards (my own K8N Neo-4F included) are somewhat allergic to FSB speeds of above 220-225 Mhz, regardless of HTT settings, mem ratios, or the newest mb BIOS. If your board happens to be one of them, the higher the starting cpu freq, the better...(ALthough at relatively high res gaming, the extra 200-400 Mhz cpu overclock is only good for 1-2 fps anyway, which is easily surpassed with even a 10 Mhz oc on gpu mem clock!)

(Good luck with it....some MSI boards do run 250-300 Mhz FSB with HTT4x,.. just not mine!)

I own an opty 165 and love it. Overclocks easy, stays cooler and IMO has more advantages per dollar than the athlon x2s. With all that is out there, esp. if your looking at a dualcore, look no further. The only other option would be to wait for a M2, but for me my money is on the Opty 165.

And as far as having to call AMD if your not buying a tray, load of crap. AMD would never do that cause their phones would be ringing off the hook, and that would cost too much in man power and hardware.

Good luck and have fun with it man.

great, so im getting a 165 or 170, theres a $200 difference between the 170 and the 175 (im in NZ).

Ive upgraded everything almost now, got a new seagate barracuda today, and an acbel 500w psu, so its looking good.

I just hope the 165/170 work with the MSI SLI-F
