PC died during gaming. Won't turn on!

Hi guys,

I'd really appreciate some help as I'm lost and don't know what to do!
I recently purchased a computer off eBay, I've had it a week now and it's been running fine. Yesterday I installed guild wars 2 and was playing when suddenly my computer went dead and wouldn't turn back on. No smell of burning or anything. I then looked on the web for clues, and came across the "paper-clip" test to see if a psu still functions. On doing so my psu is not moving at all. Even with different plugs etc! My pc was plugged into a surge protector too, do I don't thik it was a power surge.
One thing I think could have triggered it was over clocking my GPU (gtx 570) to 1075 V, 840 clock speed and 2000 memory.

My specs:
Msi (g3) mobo,
680w power supply power extreme,
8 gb ram,
Evga gtx 570,
Windows 7.
I5 2600k.

Thanx guys!

  1. Well overclocking the GPU could have overloaded the cheap and nasty PSU that probably came with it, so don't even mention it. ;)

RMA now, UK distance selling rules apply and if you get any issues, then contact ebay and paypal.
  2. The power supply was garbage, sounds like it is now dead garbage
Any decent quality 520-550w unit is plenty for the specs
  3. (deleted, pressed the send button too many times)
  4. So it sounds like its just the PSU then? The mobo wouldnt have been damaged or the GPU?
Ive gone and got a Corsair 600w one now that's twice the price. Ready for an SLI set up.
Thanx alot for the quick reply by the way. Appreciate it.

    Not with 570's
  7. Explain, will the psu not handle 2?

Don't know which 600 watt Corsair you have
One is a budget grade CWT with only 2 pcie connectors
The other is a bit higher higher quality CWT still only 2 pcie connectors
Don't know the full extent of your build but a pair of 570's could put a hurtin' on either of them that even I wouldn't contemplate, a higher quality 600w with 4 connector's, yeah I'd do it, but that's just me, others here would have an aneurysm
  9. Ok thanx for the explanation I'm a bit of a newby to building pc's. But for now this psu will be fine right? Also you didnt say whether or not the mobo or GPU would be damaged? What do ya think?

    My psu:
Corsair Builder Series CMPSU-600CX 600W Power Supply
    Model: CMPSU-600CXUK

    Yes
    By what ?
  11. Well the pc just cut off with no warning. So it wouldn't be the GPU or motherboard that died? But i have tried the psu with numerous plugs/sockets. The pc's only 6 months old. Sorry for all the Q's just need to know.
  12. Happened to me 2 years back , im afraid in my turn the PSU died along with taking out the motherboard . Cant say that you mobo might have died too , but that paper clip CONFIRMS psu is dead , no burning smell of any of that symptoms dont matter as long as shorting the green and black wires dont move the fan.

RMA it quickly if it's still under warranty.IF not , get a new one , but DONT repair it , will be waste of cash as it will go out in 2 months or so.
  13. Ok thanx. Nah I won't repair it I got a new one in the post coming :) hopefully didn't hurt my mobo!
  14. New psu fixed it! Thanx for the help
