Hi,

I am having trouble with the Radeon HD6650M (2 Gb ram) graphics for my Acer Aspire 7750G laptop. This laptop has switchable graphics. I thought it sounded like a good idea when I bought it but am having second thoughts. The other laptop specs are I5 processor, 8 Gb ram and Windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

First, I cannot update drivers. I downloaded 2 items from ATi/AMD. First the catalyst_mobility_64_bit_util.exe. When I run it, it says "AMD catalyst cannot be downloaded due to incompatible hardware/software on the computer. The version of your graphics adapter is not supported. Please contact your notebook manufacturer for a graphics driver update."

Then I downloaded and installed a utility from the AMD site "Automatically Detect and Install" here:

http://support.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDSupportHub.aspx

This utility givers me the same error message.

When I go to the Acer site there is no driver update for this model.
http://support.acer.com/product/default.aspx?modelId=3476

Next, and I think related, there are a couple examples of the 6650M gpu not being recognized by games. I installed Skyrim the other day and the game launcher can automatically set game graphics settings but it does not see the 6650M gpu. It only sees the Intel integrated graphics gpu. The Diablo 3 Beta does the same thing. There is a scanner for D3 (and other Blizzard titles) that allows you to post your machine specs for beta opt-in, but the scanner also does not recognize the 6650M card. This, even if I set Windows Explorer to run in "high performance" in the CCC switchable graphics control panel.

I want to be able to play Skyrim without lag. It does play but it lags. According to the Skyrim wiki this gpu should be able to play in medium settings, but I have it on low and it still lags.

So, two distinct issues, however I think they are related. But this is where my knowledge of video graphics troubleshooting stops. Please let me know if you can help.

Go here and follow instructions for downloading modded bios and adjusting two settings. Working great on my 7750G-6669.

That thread looks like just the thing I need. Thanks so much for linking that. But I am so afraid to flash the bios. If it doesn't work for some reason doesn't it mess up the machine and perhaps make it non-functional?
