can a faulty psu cause my tower to reset randomly , i have got a spare powersupply as the one in my tower is the one that came with a case ... what sort of test can i run in windows to check for faulty psu and other copononts

There is no test you can run. If you have a digital multi-meter, you can test the PSU itself to see if it is putting out the correct voltages.
