Odd Halo 2 symbol?

I was playing Halo on Live the other day, and one of the fellows I played
against had a silver/grey ring in the place where his ranking should have
been. Anyone seen this before? What's it mean?

BTW, his tag was Jschulz. It comes up in a search, but says no games
played.
