Want to buy a desktop for scientific computation (mainly use Fortran). Tentatively, I am interested in the following two configs. I do not know why workstation is generally much more expensive than the others.

For the following two configurations, XPS8500 is equipped with Intel I7-3770, which is faster than Intel Xeon W3550 in workstation T3500.

Which is better? Is workstation is generally preferred for scientific computing?

Thanks

1

Dell Precision T3500 Workstation (3.06GHZ, with turbo up to 3.33GHZ)

CPU: Intel Xeon W3550
RAM: 6G

2

Dell New XPS8500

CPU: I7-3770 (3.4GHZ, with turbo Boost 2.0 up to 3.9GHZ )
RAM: 6G

If the computation runs seconds get the i7. Run it twice.

If the computation runs months then consider the better error checking in the Xeon cpu. You wouldn't want an uncorrected error. I'm assuming the Xeon server has ECC memory, server MB, etc. but didn't check.

I would go with the Xeon cpu as that one is considered a better cpu for servers and buisness type applications and while both are capable of scientific calculations since the are built for that in the first place you always hear of Xeon processors being used in super-computers and other high end computers that are used for scientific applications.
