550 TI too much for my old system?

I just connected my HDTV to my desktop only to find out that the TV has problems with a DVI to HDMI connection. I've tried several cords and nothing works so I'm looking to get a new video card. My TV doesn't have any problems with an HDMI to HDMI connection from other sources (laptop, PS3, satellite receiver) so I'm pretty convinced that it's the DVI to HDMI that is causing problems (screen flickering, losing connection, etc). Plus, I've been holding out on upgrading my hardware for so long it's kind of a good excuse for me to bite the bullet and just do it.

My question is, will a 550 TI be too much for my current system? System specs are as follows:

Mobo: ASUS P5QL
Proc: Q6600
Ram: 4 GB DDR2 1066
Video Card: 9800 GTX+
PSU: 585 Watt

I'm worried that a 550 TI would be too much for my current system because my other hardware is so old. I used to game quite often and my system was pretty sweet SEVEN years ago. :sarcastic: Now I only occasionally game and will probably update the entire system further down the road.

No the GTX 550 wont be over-kill for your system at all. According to Toms Graphics Card Hierarchy Charts, it is only 1 level above your current card.

That card is probably even a bit underpowered to fully realize your cpu's potential. I would think you could go the next step up and run a gtx560, or gtx 560Ti, and your cpu wouldnt bottleneck it. Your cpu isnt really too bad. It is in the same category as the AthlonII X4's, and the PhenomII X4 945

If your powersupply is a quality unit, it would power any of these cards
