HDMI vs S/PDIF

Hello,
Built pc w/nvidia 9 series card, plugged in spdif from card to asus motherboard with hdmi output. Question is, can I use the hdmi to go to receiver to play or do I need to use the spdif connection somehow?

I use spdif. But HDMI can do audio as well.
