The first thing to do is make sure you haven't accidentally turned off the backlight. Check your manual for more information. It would also help if you post the exact make and model of the laptop.

Connect laptop to an external monitor. See if there is image. If yes, problem most likely with laptop LCD. If no image on external monitor, problem could be graphics card on motherboard.
