If I archive my RAW files from my Canon EOS 10D to a CD, how do I get
the RAW file from the CD back into an image editing software program,
such as Canon ZoomBrowser, Canon File Viewer Utility, or Photoshop?
I've really not been much of a computer guy prior to digital. I'm a
photographer trying to learn a new working process. I shoot everything
in RAW. I download all RAW images to my computer's hard drive, and
store them in monthly folders. I process the images in Canon's
ZoomBrowser EX, then save the processed image as 8 bit TIFFs, which I
save to an event-specific folder (i.e. Mom's Birthday). I then
archive all the .CRW appended RAW files from the monthly RAW image
folder to a CD-R. I save all the TIFFs to an event-specific CD-R. If
I lose the RAW files on my hard drive, how do I get them from the CD
and back into ZoomBrowser EX?
Sorry if this is elementary, but I really don't know the answer. I
also was not able to Google an explanation that I could understand.

In Photoshop:
Select the File Tab
Then Select Open
Open will display a folder and the files contained inside.
If that folder is not what you want, then go to the the down arrow beside
the list of images.
Click the arrow to bring up the list of folders.
Somewhere on that list will be your CD drive.
Click on the CD drive to bring up the list of files on it.
Your RAW file should be there.
Then click on the one you want, and proceed.
The others should work the same way.
You can also associate which ever program you want to use with the file
type, but you need to read about this subject in Help & Support first.

One way is to make a new temporary directory on your hard drive and
copy the files over to that directory, then open them with the RAW
software.
A second way is to just load the CD and it will show as a drive, and
you can just open the files directly off the CD from the RAW converter.
I tried this with EosViewer and Capture One and both programs let me
view and open the RAW files on a CD without copying them over to the HD
first, but it takes longer since the CD is slower than the hard drive.

Not a problem ... I wasn't sure that the converters would open the
files directly off a CD either, but I just tried it on two of them and
they both worked.

Thank you, Bill and Jim. Your explanations make perfect sense to me.
I checked out my ZoomBrowser EX program. All the files appear in a
column just left of the thumbnails. I just had to scroll down to find
the CD folder. Now I can rest better. Thanks!

Aside: I'd recommend also archiving as at least highest quality jpeg if not
16-bit tiff. Ten or 15 years from now, the current software may or may not
recognize the format from a long-discontinued camera. But it's pretty likely
that CD readers and jpeg and tiff will still be around.

Michael,
As you get a little more into digital photography, you will learn that
you really could use a digital image management application.
ThumbsPlus by Cerious Software is a very affordable way to view,
convert and catalog your digital RAW files. It supports lots of cool
features for searching files on your harddisk and ever CD-R's that have
been scanned into the database too.
