I7-2700k on Z77?

I would like to purchase the SB i7-2700k over the IB i7-3770k because I heard the temperatures for the 3770k is all over the place. I would like to overclock but not spend to much on cooling. So what motherboard would you recommend me to get? Or should I just get a z68 3rd Gen. What downfalls would i have running a Sandy Bridge CPU on a Z77 motherboard meant for Ivy Bridge?

More about 2700k
  1. I tend to play a lot of cpu based games, that rely on the cpu more than the GPU. I will also b purchasing a amd 7850 with it. Currently i have a x6 1600t (not x6 1100t) I also do video editing and rendering.
  2. With 2700k on z77 you get PCIe2.0 with 3770k you get PCIe 3.0

3770k is approximately 5% faster than 2700k on same frequency IB 4.3GHz= SB 4.5GHz

For all but extreme overclocking 3770k is better choice

With CM Hyper 212 EVO you should get around 4.4GHz on 3770k

okay, thats true, i wanna overclock it 4.6+
  4. I also can get the i7-2700k for around 80 dollars cheaper than a i7-3770k at microcenter
  5. noctua nh-d14 with a good motherboard like ASRock Fatal1ty Z77 will get around 4.7 from 3770 just make sure to get some low profile RAM with noctua
  6. For 80 dollars less 2700k is maybe better choice if whole PC costs about 1000 dollars 80 is 8% save for 5% less performance
  7. i'm thinking about getting the CoolerMaster V8. I'm going to get the cpu and the new motherboard aroudn black friday. I already have everything except the cpu cooler, cpu, and motherboard
  8. i was thinking about getting the ASUS ROG Maximus v Gene
  9. tell us your budget for cpu, cpu cooler and motherboard also post parts you already intend to use with new parts especially PSU to make a recommendation
  10. Budget for cpu cooler/cpu/mobo is around 500-550 i can go to microcenter. I already have a phantom 410 case, g skills sniper ram at 1866, 1 tb hdd+120gb ssd, and a corsair 600 watt gaming series psu
  11. Buy ASUS Maximus V Gene, 2700k and noctua nh-d14 if you have money left buy 3770k. I think noctua nh-d14 is better than CoolerMaster V8. Your ram is apparently low profile so it will not make problems with noctua.
what graphics card you intend to use?
  12. I intend to use a amd 7850 not much of a hardcore gamer anymore, might upgrade to a 670 FTW later
  13. I think amd 7850 with any oc on the cpu will do fine on corsair 600w but a more power consuming card may be a problem
  14. the noctua nh-d14 is enormous though, i wish they still made the prolimatech megashadow
  15. The problem with putting a SB on a IB designated board is the loss of features exclusive to IB architecture, there is no point paying for features you cannot use so rather look for a Z68
  16. The price difference is not really a difference when im saving 80 dollars on getting a 2700k. Also it will be more future proof
