i want to know if you have a cpu that is an am3 socket and a motherboard that only supports am3+ sockets would it still work

yes the am3 socket cpus will work fine in an am3+ motherboard. Its when u use a am3+ cpu in a am3 socket motherboard that a compatibility arises, except in certain chipset am3 motherboards usually 890FX but AM3+ mobo+AM3 cpu = Compatible

Yes AM3+ is backward compatible.
